How do you all deal with feeling down when you watch your peers hit milestones that you've always wanted to achieve for yourself? For some weird reason, I tend to take it personally when it's a non-black friend who hit the milestone. It makes me get in my feelings and think just feel really stuck and unable to see my dreams any longer. Would love some help on tackling this in a better, healthier way. Comparison truly is the thief of my joy right now, and I want to get over it.

I don’t compare myself, my life, or my journey with others. Everyone has their own struggles and triumphs. You really only see a small percentage of people’s lives, so why focus energy making yourself feel down about that when you have a full picture of your own life to shape and mold?

I love this view of life. Thanks for sharing.

First off, I want you to know that your feelings are valid. It's human nature to compare ourselves to others, especially our friends. But here's the thing - everyone's journey is different, and that's what makes life beautiful.
Your dreams are still very much alive. They're just waiting for you to breathe new life into them. Remember, success isn't a race or a competition. It's about personal growth and achieving what matters to you.
Try to shift your perspective a bit. Instead of feeling stuck, see your friend's success as proof that dreams do come true.

It is important to try and focus on yourself and not compare too much. For that milestone hit you have no idea what else is going on with that person. It is hard to see others getting things you want no doubt, but all you can do is focus on yourself on how to get yourself there.

You're so right. 'Everything is not what it seems'

It's easy to conclude that we as people of color couldn't get the same opportunities as others, and it's natural for you to feel that way. But I've learned over time that, at least as of these days, opportunities are the same for everyone. There's pie for everyone :) Keep working hard for yours!

I remember that there’s still so many milestones I’ve hit that others haven’t.

Create a plan to hit the milestones that you want with actionable steps you will take to get there

I’ve been working to an unhealthy degree lately. And I’ve been making the excuse that I have a lot of work right now, but I’m starting to wonder if I’m addicted to it. Part of it is anxiety and perfectionism. But my behavior is now actively harmful to myself and starting to harm my marriage.

How do I stop? I’m not talking work-life balance. I mean, how do I say, “I don’t care that the client wants this tomorrow and I’m not close to done, I’m going to sleep tonight”?

Hi,

Just started a new job less than a month ago in the tech sector. It was the industry I was fixated on when leaving for. However I realise that I don't think I can cope with the fast paced, lack of wlb, with no support - it's really impacting my mental health already....

I try to hide it from my boyfriend, but its impact is flowing into my personal life.
I feel like a failure, but recognise it might be beneficial to cut loss and quit. Has anyone been in this situation?

Any advice?

I know this isn’t a marriage therapy bowl, but my husband has a really terrible tendency of saying things like “you’re being really mean” and completely shutting down during a disagreement when i objectively am not being mean, just truthful or vocal about how i feel about something. It’s a really convenient argument for him because it enables him to either be the victim and me the villian, or forces me to concede my stance and not reach a true resolution. Any tips on dealing with the irrational?

Frustrated my fiancé keeps talking about raising our future kids in the way he was raised. We’re from different cultures. He wants to name them based on his culture, send them to schools with dual immersion in his language so “they don’t get too American,” and has even mentioned moving so they’re exposed to his homeland and culture. A long post: seeking some perspective. My husband of 2 years that I’ve been in a relationship with for more than 8 years just woke up one day and told me that he’s unhappy in our relationship. I’m devastated because he’s never expressed anything like this in the 8 years. He’s been super supportive and loving, even when we were in a long distance relationship. He supported my career and dreams and this just doesn’t make sense. We have gotten a counselor but things aren’t getting better. Comment>

My fiancé moved abroad for med school. Long distance is hard but I love my job, the work, the people, and the culture. I wish there were roles where you could work abroad. I wish I could work here forever, but I’ll likely need to switch to a firm that allows working abroad at some point to save the marriage. I’m afraid to tell anyone because I want to maximize my time/contribution here. Thoughts? Advice? Does anyone know of good firms that allow abroad work?

My wife surprised me last night for my 30th bday (which was last week) with a get together with my closest friends I have known since middle school. Most of them live out of state with kids and somehow it all worked out. Feeling really loved.

I made a mistake. I talked with the ex this morning. He said he misses me. And that while he walk talking to the other woman, he wished he was talking to me instead. And when he saw that I didn’t respond to his texts, he drank a shit ton. And then called this morning.

He’s not willing to commit to the other women because he’s not over me.

I need to block him.
