How do you feel about the requirement to share a LinkedIn profile in many online applications? Personally, as someone who has almost entirely removed Google, Meta, and Microsoft from my life, I find it very irratating. It's not like it helps reduce fraud either, and LinkedIn posts are so vapid that it's a meme now. Why do hiring managers think this is a good idea? From my perspective it's just excluding people who pay the most attention to the technology landscape.

So then why not list a fake LinkedIn address like www.LinkedIn.com/in/OfflineOnPurpose

Or……

in/DoesNotUseLinkedIn.

in/NotOnThisPlatform

in/OfflineButQualified

in/IRelyOnExperienceNotApps

in/ThisIsARequiredField

Now the application can finally submit. You’ve satisfied the required field, and the URL makes it clear—politely—that you don’t use LinkedIn. Anyone paying attention will get the message

Yeah I mean I understand the appeal of the verification argument, but the fact of the matter is that fraud and impersonation is rampant on LinkedIn as well. Treating it as added security or verification is nothing more than false sense of safety. I'm not against having *some* public info, that's why I maintain a personal site and blog. But requiring it to be LinkedIn specifically just strikes me as lazy and missing out on the most talented hires. At least in software, of the people I know, level of Luddic behavior tends to scale proportionally to skill: The people who skip LinkedIn also tend to be the people who self host, who manage a fedi instance, who hoard 100TB of storage on their homelab made from reused server pieces, the people who have cobbled together on prem cloud environments in their own home that are more advanced than the systems their employers use. Again, just anecdotal, and obviously this isn't a universal rule. The good news is not all companies require LinkedIn, and those will be the ones who get access to the most qualified candidates who are overlooked by other companies.

Create a bare bones profile with your name and last initial and your title. Then list your skills and and any other unidentifiable information you want to add. You can also turn off public visibility so your profile isn't exposed outside of LinkedIn users. Seems like a pretty anonymous way of satisfying the request.

A very practical and realistic answer. I'd definitely do this if I was more desperate for a job. But on principal I don't like Microsoft holding the keys to deciding who does and does not get a job.

Because some positions like Recruiting use Linked In in their jobs so the Hiring Managers have to see if they have an active profile. Also, hiring managers look to see if your resume matches your profile because people have several resumes they are using targeting several position titles. There’s a business reason for companies to ask. If you don’t want to provide it or don’t have a LI profile, just write N/A.

Linkedin was at a time the place to have your online profile for jobs and business networking. Over the last several years it has gone downhill and is nothing more than a different flavor of Facebook. Its full of useless self serving posts and repetitive memes and fake job postings by offshore headhunters and scammers.

I have passed on companies looking for the LumpedIn requirement when applying. Even some CIO organizations require a profile just to sign up. LumpedIn is more like a dating profile, most of the time what you see is not what you get.

Its a violation or state labor laws & anti-trust laws & forced labor laws. Many state have "Social Media Privacy Laws in Employment" to prevent companies from requiring social media access to apply for a job, exspecially when most request come from a competitor called Dice. Because Dice & the recruiting companies, all compete with Linkdin, it violates anti-trust law by allowing Linkedin to control its competitors. Furthermore, since most recruiters work thru layers & may not know the end customer, Linkedin could be creating fake jobs to increase its membership base & increase sales, by exploiting unpaid labor, which can violate forced labor laws, as defined as serious harm thru reputational harm or psychological; harm, to get free labor, also know as anti-trafficking laws.

I can’t speak for whatever company this was, however I suspect it’s part of a) verifying you are who you say you are b) you’re less likely to have multiple jobs

I’m sure all of you commenting are decent and hard working people, but I’m also confident not many of you have the responsibly of putting food on the table every month for dozens of people and their families.

We have only 75 people but there have been numerous occasions over the last ten years where we have employed people who turned out to be working two jobs or borrowing peoples identity, threatening to expose our IP and general theft of equipment.

As an company founder I have a responsibility to all our team that we try our best to make good hiring decisions and hire people who are net contributors so that we can keep putting food on the table for our awesome people.

Linked-In visibility, jobs that match your CV, recommendation from people etc is just one tool in our toolbox to help us identify suspicious activity that just doesn’t look right.

I agree it’s frustrating but with the digital age so many people can apply for roles the more an employer can suss you out the better for them. They want to see if you’re engaged in company culture, have references, are knowledgeable and a thought leader. Many people are good at their job, what makes you the better choice aside from skill?

Companies want to see who will be as compliant as possible. With AI taking over the workplace, they want drones, not visionaries, for middle management and below.

I don’t like LinkedIn. It’s fake, and 99% of the time you just roll your eyes reading the nonsense. But ultimately, some companies just want to see who will roll with the punches. I have a LinkedIn, and never post. I’ll repost content from others once every couple months to appear active, but that’s all. I never update it with my current employer because it’s nobody’s business where I currently work.

Also, some companies just want to see what you look like before they even interview you. This is VERY common in public relations agencies where you’ll notice that almost all the employees are at minimum, moderately attractive. That’s not a coincidence - they 100% discriminated against applicants and judged their appearance before even offering them an interview. Pretty privilege.

I have noticed that as well. I don't normally post on LinkedIn so if they're looking for something, they won't really find it there.

Much of the time when this is required, it's because they are trying to filter out candidates who are Over Employed. I don't think anyone job hunting _likes_ LinkedIn, but for emloyers it is an easy way trick candidates into to stating whether they are currently employed publicly. I'm not saying that this is right or not—just a reality.

Thoughts on “special” salary grades. I just found out the VP I was offered is not a grade 12 like most comparable roles (verified). Also not an 11, but an 11A. Slightly higher than an 11, a good bit lower than a 12. All due to the fact that it’s a leap from my current position. Why should that matter…..shouldn’t it pay what it should pay if I am selected, rather that curving down towards my current rate?
