Hope I can be of some help. I've been trying to get one for a little while. A couple of options... you can pay, but very expensive. Looking at around $150-200 per session. Some will do discounted rates depending on circumstances (student, low income etc). There are some covered by OHIP but my doctor was telling me generally they don't see patients long term, are long waiting lists, and are hard to get accepted to see. There's an online system called Tranqool which people seem to rate but I feel a bit awkward about that. I'm hoping someone else can offer up a better solution for you, because I'm kinda in limbo at the moment as well
I stood on a ledge for a good 16 hours. After that, therapists just sort of threw themselves at me. Sorry. Mh therapist says I use offputting humor as a defense mechanism.
This is hard. I tried to "find" on and came up short. Try ZocDoc I guess? I didn't want to ask around to coworkers or friends because it felt too personal.
I should add, psychologists are never covered by OHIP and can't provide prescriptions, psychiatrists are covered (but hard to get into) and can prescribe medication
Psychology today (I think) has a search function where you can enter all your info and they suggest a few. That's how I've found mine.
I don't know much about the Canadian healthcare system, but I can tell you what I would recommend in the US.
First, check out your healthcare provider's web site. Get a full list of covered providers within your area. Then, start to narrow it down by what specialties you're looking for based on your circumstances. I look for someone who specializes in anxiety and grief, for example. I also find that psychologists are overall more effective than social workers because of the higher level of education. You should also consider if age and gender factor into making you feel more comfortable talking to someone.
With all this narrowed down, your list should be much smaller. Start making phone calls. Some people won't be taking new patients, some will have waiting lists. Try to get appointments with around 3 possible therapists.
Then, meet with them all. See who you feel the most comfortable talking to, and continue seeing them.
I hope that's helpful!
I started with the health providers website but ended up using a reco from a co worker.
