Almost no companies will do this - to AS1's point, they're just verifying your employment. Companies that give negative references open themselves up to defamation lawsuits so most HR policies won't allow them.
yeah this doesn’t happen in those employment checks. it’s illegal. they can only confirm whether or not you actually worked there and dates.
you probably got a bad informal reference from a friend of a decision maker. industry is small. people talk and definitely know some of the people you’ve worked with.
Agree with the other replies. HR verifies past employment. But CDs will snoop and troll and text people who worked with you. Be more worried about the them. Small world.
It’s not just creatives that do this
Be open about it in the interview process. Talk about the experience not being the right fit for whatever reason. Normally those types of employment checks are to just confirm you're not lying on your resume or did something crazy, they should consider the references you give as well.
They never called my references.
You can hire someone to do a check on your behalf to get direct insight into what’s being said.
Are the bad reviews valid?
I’m not sure what they’re saying, so I have no answer to your question
