I did it once, it was awful. These places love the thought of agency people, but they move at a snail’s pace, are overly process-focused and, dare I say, boring. A team of people coalescing around living a single brand can very easily become cult-like.
I quit halfway through my probation and went back to agency.
Would I do it again? Possibly - but definitely with a freelance try-before-you-buy period if it was an option.
I made the switch 12 years ago.
I'm now doing GTM strategies on Mondays and Tuesdays, shooting tiltok on Wednesdays, UX on Thursdays and growth/sales on Fridays and having a blast.
I made that switch, and it was definitely an adjustment! In-house roles tend to have more structure and long-term focus, while agency life is fast-paced and varied. The biggest challenge for me was shifting from juggling multiple clients to zeroing in on just one brand, it can be boring sometimes but it also feels more stable too. And WLB is better for sure
I think I felt ready for the switch because I had been in creative for so long and was feeling burnt out on it. It was refreshing to have my own creative head space back for my own projects and let work be more analytical. I think I just needed a change though
As an agency-turned-in-house creative I found that you had a lot more autonomy brand side and the impact to the business’s bottom line was immediate. But you’re exposed to all the chaos and ugliness of a company being on the inside rather than being shielded from it at an agency. Comes down to preference, IMO.
