How long have you been out of work? I'm starting to think it's time for me to move on to a slower career. I've been out of work for almost an entire year, and at 55 I'm tired of interviewing over and over again with people half my age who act like I have nothing to offer. I'm starting to feel like I'm unhireable, and maybe it's time to move on.

There are contract jobs. Elevate K12 pays well for teaching remote. Paying well depends on which state you are from, cost of living, and what you are used to getting. Schools seem to resist employing older teachers due to our years of service that costs them more money. They would rather higher someone without experience and pay them less. I found this out by watching several districts as they made the older teachers jobs miserable to get them to leave. The same was happening to me at the end, but then I got cancer and this sped up the time line to go without work. Remote teaching jobs helped with the bills until I could retire.

Don't give up! I got fired at the beginning of COVID-19 and was out of work until 2023, and now I'm unemployed again. I can't give up on this because I know it's what I'm meant to do, but I know there were moments when I definitely felt like it. How long have you been teaching?

One thing may be to be flexible about where you are willing to teach. It seems that most of the vacancies are in rural, or other less desirable, areas.

First, take a deep breath. Everything will work out.

Ok, as a veteran teacher who was let go during COVID, I felt your pain and frustration. The reality was that after 30 years experience with an MA, schools could hire rookies for a lot, lot less. So I became versed in online learning platforms, both as a virtual instructor and as a program director of a local school using the same program. Also look for unique positions that may not require specific subject certification (other than the grade level) and also those jobs that have been open awhile to see if a long-term sub option might be an option. Subbing sucks for most, but it gets you in the door. School is about to start so admin in feeling pressure to put a body in front of the classroom which may open up an opportunity for you.

Lastly, if looking outside of education, talk to your friends and network for suggestions. You taught, meaning you showed up on time everyday and followed the rules. Most employers would love to have folks with those two skills and will train for anything else.

Be creative and open to options. Don’t give up! You’ve got this!

How do you engage your students in more reading outside of what is required in the classroom? With each passing year I am finding an ever shrinking population of students, including honors students, who actually read beyond what is posted in social media or video games. Students willingly volunteer that they do not read and most parents see it as a non-issue. I tell my students that the best readers are usually the best writers. What are some strategies that you use beyond reading logs ?
