To those who transferred offices - when is the best time to do so? Currently, a staff 1, should I wait to become a senior to have better options or does it even matter?

I love when M1 freaks out 😅

^ don't listen to these people. I transferred after my first year. HR was really good about it and the transfer happened quickly. I think it's better to do it sooner rather than later, so you can start building a client base and knowledge at your new office. I am new senior now and am glad I had that year on these clients before I was expected to senior them.

like

Likely hardest to do in promotion year and first year at a new level. Assuming you're going into staff 2 year, I'd wait until you're promoted to senior. Moving to a new office where nobody knows you and you've got zero connections and no knowledge of clients can make it hard on you in your promotion year.

like

Unfortunately, I was recruited specifically to work in that office. I like the job just can't stand living in the area - very high COL.

like

Sure don't listen to the people that have significantly more experience than the new senior. @OP maybe it works out for you, maybe it doesn't. I've seen it go both ways. For sure your path to senior will be more difficult if you transfer in your promotion year. Seen this scenario many times. Sometimes the person overcomes the hurdles and sometimes they struggle and it takes them an extra year. If you feel very strongly then you gotta do what you gotta do, but just something to consider that the path to senior will definitely be harder in the new office.

like

You should have told the recruiters your desire to start in a different office - they would have put you in contact with the recruiters/HR in your desired office.

That aside, it looks pretty shitty to transfer after your first year. Best bet would be to make senior in your current office and attempt to transfer as a new senior.

like

@Op just so you know I was still early promoted(2 years at pwc) after transferring. I would not stay in a city for another 2 years if you are miserable. How are you rated? This can make a difference in how willing they are to transfer you. I was rated a 2 in my old office and am rated 2 in new office as well so I think that helped

like

It really doesn't matter. I know a bunch of people who transferred in their first 3 years and all were promoted on time. They all received the transfer within a few months of the request or the required timeline as well.

like

Just move. I was recruited in Kansas City and got my full time offer. Was supposed to start full time in January, in October I told the partner I wanted to move to Denver. They flew me to Denver to do a little mini interview with the local office and they approved the transfer. I started full time in the new office. That was with Grant Thornton. If you don't mind the promotion delay, just move. Who cares. You'll be happier just moving.

like

There has to be a business need for your role at the new office - Every office needs seniors, some need experienced staff.

like

Why didn't you just start in the office you want to transfer to?

Thank you guys, appreciate your responses!

Would lean towards M1 on this. Make your promotion and then jump - all offices need seniors (might be able to get a relo bonus too).

PwC2, I was rated a 3.

Personally I would not stay living in a place that I don't love! At the end of the day you're an accountant and hopefully have your cpa or want it! Put in your transfer and hope for the best.
