I say go for it as soon as possible. If there's a position, apply. Even if you don't get it, they'll know you're interested in moving up. I don't think there's anything wrong with being ambitious. Especially if you know the skills or are prepared to learn.
If you have one on ones make it clear you’re interested in becoming a director and ask what is needed. After that do those things while also looking at what other companies require and see if you can somehow get experience that will make you valuable in the market. Once you have some results start applying elsewhere that way if your current company starts to play games you can already be looking. You can also consider leveraging another offer to get what you want from your current company. However there are risks with the leverage approach as some say once you say you’re considering leaving the company may start trying to find a replacement for you.
