How many direct reports does everyone have? I only have seven but they are a handful.

5. 3 I spent the last few years training and two new ones who are getting up to speed nicely. Honestly very happy with my team and their ability to constantly be improving and finding new ways to succeed

Any more than 5 makes it tough to be truly effective, especially the closer you/they are to the day-to-day.

Too many. 10

I’m in charge of 4 departments, have 3 directors reporting to me and then they have all their teams reporting to them.

None. But it’s still expected that I have the ability to get people in different functions and orgs, with different budgets and different priorities, even rolling up to different SVPs, to do what I need them to do, when I need them to do it.

But it seems like the OP was about management, not leadership, yes?

I moved from 4 to 6 in January, and it felt like a big adjustment, and not for the better. I'm about to move teams and will have only 1 and am happy about that.

Started at 3, doubled to 6, now Im at 11... all within the span of 8 months. I love the management aspect if my job but it's become a handful so I'm definitely restructuring to only have 5 report into me.

You need to flatten that thing out. Can you promote someone to supervisor?

Tax manager - 27. Too many... But we get by well. 🙂

I feel like I've been lowballed, can someone explain the below breakdown please?

Base salary: 60k
Quarterly quota (per quarter): 107k
Quarterly bonus (per annum): 23k
130% Annual bonus = 11.5k
"23% commission on quota minus base": 37k (don't understand this)
"Proposed 23% commission on 150% quota minus base": 86.5k
Sales commission threshold per month: 22k
OTE: 122k
Cost/Sales: 28%

That base salary is lower than my previous base by a significant amount by 32.7%

We have sales people in Canada and the US, the Canadians make 150K CAD and down here it’s 150K USD, the Canadians argue they should be making 30% more than the US colleagues to be equal bc of the exchange! I explain the salary is dependent on the market data for them in Canada, WHERE THEY LIVE, and you can’t compare it to the US employees and the market data down here. Overall they are both in the 75th% for total comp. for their industry. Am I wrong?

Our annual reviews are approaching & one of my direct reports has been with us for almost six years w/ little growth. My reco was to let him go & find a stronger, hungrier & more motivated designer at the same level. However, my boss instead wants us to promote him in hopes that will spark some motivation. I am not behind this decision & have voiced my multitude of concerns in promoting an employee who doesn't deserve it. HR is behind the decision! Thoughts on promoting an undeserving report?

Any thoughts on how do we deal with an incompetent boss who you dont look up to and have no trust that you would ever get credit for the work you would do for him/her? Given that changing the boss is not an option.

I had a great review and a 5.5% raise and a great bonus at my company. But I also got a new Director and a peer manager of mine left the company, so I will be absorbing her team. In addition, my director said I will be receiving 'deep delegation' from them. I don't mind more work, but deep delegation is a new term I've never heard. What does that mean lol?

Hi everyone!

After years of hard work, I just got my first position in a leadership role! Yay! I’ll be leading a team of 12.
I wanted to know if you had any tips for me, things you wish you knew before, or things previous leaders did for/to you that you found admirable or stayed with you. I want to make sure I’m there for them and want to be a leader they will remember positively.

Thank you so much!!
