I don’t have an answer for most of your question but I do have to ask if you’ve ever actually used the VA in your area before? I have a 90% disability determination and tried to use the VA but it was absolutely awful. I waited 4 mo for my first appt and would have had to wait 6+ mo to get a specialist referral for a pre-existing that I was being treated for prior to desperation. I do have friends who have liked their VA care. It seems to be based entirely on your local clinic. If you haven’t scoped out your local clinic it may be advisable to do so before making this decision.
You may also want to consider that you will be foregoing access to a HSA which is one of the best retirement savings vehicles there is.
Sorry I couldn’t answer your other questions. Best of luck.
I’ve thought about trimming off the corporate insurance to save a buck as well, but ultimately haven’t.
30%. Used VA in many locations over the years and has been pretty good. The satellite clinics tend to be better.
My corporate health insurance has a $5k deductible and I max my HSA.
I don’t go see a doctor often, but have only been to VAs since I’ve been out of the military.
I see the corporate insurance is more of a back up, and there’s not always a VA near by.
I know PwC's health plan is awful, and probably a year after I start, we'd be looking to have a second child.
I'm not sure how VA health care works if you have a private insurer, but I do know the VA is always the last payer. Can I decline PwC health insurance and just stay under VA? If so, would that even make sense to do?
My wife really, really likes Kaiser health insurance and would want to be under that, so I guess we'd look at getting her and my daughter under that and me on VA health care.
Does this at all make sense? Is it feasible? What do you all do that are eligible for VA healthcare? Thanks!
I'm in the SF Bay Area and have had pretty good experiences with the VA healthcare system around me and we have a handful of options. Not perfect, but good enough and I generally don't require much from them and am fairly healthy.
Good call on HSA though, I didn't consider that. The idea of $10,000 out of pocket (from what I heard) for our next child seems terrible though and seems like HSA wouldn't do much to offset that. Will keep researching, thanks!
I just realized how many typos are in my comment.
I didn't see one and they typically stick out like a sore thumb to me. 👋
Retiree with 100%, I use Tricare prime. Less than $700 a year for the family. If not close to a base/post, Tricare choice.
I’ve had a lot of issues with VA Patient Choice, had to be referred out in town for neurology and frankly it’s too stressful. The VA didn’t pay my doctor twice.
Does having a PPO change my care cost at the VA?
I’m 80%, med sep, not retired.
