So for my first few months I had strong imposter syndrome and I clearly felt a lack of leadership when it came to the deliverable including how a deck was supposed to look. Not knowing exactly in detail how the deck should be or the topology in the word/Visio doc must appear to meet EY and client expectations/guidelines really freaked me out and added to the fear of termination for not meeting expectations i didn’t understand. I later discovered the reason is, it’s not that people don’t have time (nobody has time at EY) but the reason the deck landed on your desk if because no one else knows what to put in the deck either. Sure we have basic EY themes, but the content and how to deliver it was the mystery. So you were given a task and you didn’t quite hit the mark due to lack of proper guidance from a manger or senior manager. It was in the email, but lack of time, growing workload, and minimal guidance on the overall look and feel (which can take a day in itself) distracted you. It happens, everyone knows it. Your manager knows it. Your senior manager knows it and whomever assigned you the task now knows they need to follow up with you after sending the email to discuss questions. I deliver decks that dont contain ALL the details the manager or SM may need, BUT, you knocked out 75% of the work for them. You missed some ideas, you still gave them something to build on they don’t have to do or spend a day coming up with. They add in the missing details or adjust direction and done. You save them time not cost them. Expecting a perfect deck immediately before client presentation isn’t on you. So how to keep calm? Realize they turn to you, not because you are low hanging fruit and they aren’t...but they lack time to come up with the ideas so the ball is tossed to you with minimal details on theme and little details on data. To get to that realization drink some camomile tea. Knocks the stress down a lot and if it isn’t enough to clear your mind immediately make a second cup. Takes less than 3 min in Keurig for hot water and drop in the tea bag. Available in stores. For severe stress and anxiety (I mean so bad you can’t focus even a little) a shot of tequila will clear your mind QUICK (you will be quite happy too) and give you focus without being drunk, but only when stress and anxiety is really really bad. It’s a fine line between being out in the club and getting work done. Save for bad stress. 2 cups of Camomile should be more than enough. After a few months you won’t need either because you’ll have all the confidence you need.
I am in the same situation.
Just chill out, you’re not getting fired for screwing up a deck.
