Bain & Company Hi All. I am an Energy Engineer and 3 years of experience. I want to switch to a management consultancy because I think I would be a good fit for strategy consulting and want to move into ESG/Climate Financing. I would love to interview with your team if you’re looking to hire someone with this background (happy to share more via DMs).
The purpose of this post is to also ask for referrals so please let me know if I could reach out to you for that. TIA! McKinsey & Company Bain & Company Boston Consulting Group

Unless you feel like you are at risk at being fired, I couldn’t pray enough for a position like this.
Let’s trade spots
Can’t argue with that

You’ve got a really great job right now. Rather than look for a new job you should just be proactive and do more at work. It will ultimately keep you busy and accelerate the time to promo

Sorry, added but very valuable context. I was you and decided to go work at a high burn high pay shop and now I’m suffering and miss my free time and predictable life. Currently working to go back to where I was
Don’t fly too close to the sun. Your wings will burn.
You’re 27 and making more money than majority of people twenty older than you.
If you really want to work a full 40 hour week, use the downtime to invest in yourself: learn something new, start a business, do home improvement projects, run around your neighborhood or try new things to further refine/ understand your identity.
The grass is greener on the other side. I left a well paying job + amazing team in industry for consulting because I wanted to experience something new and grow more. I don’t regret the move, but I sure do miss my old lifestyle.
In reality, growth can take place anywhere; it’s up to you to seek out the opportunities (it may not be at work; it may be Udemy/Coursera).
Is your role remote 👀? If so is your company hiring?
In a very similar position and I do (non competitive) freelance work on the side to boost my income. Also enjoy a ton of hobbies, travel a lot, and applied to grad school. Going to start volunteering in my local community this year.
When I talk to friends in HF/PE they tell me they wish they would work half as much and make half as much; and that’s pretty much what we have going on. Feel lucky!
I work in corp strategy (exited consulting to industry) but work the same hours as MBB. Promotions and pay are on par with mbb but i hate the hours (70-80 hrs). We’re also expected to be responsive on weekends and vacations. I would rather take a small paycut and work less
I would start a side hustle and diversify.
This was me late 2022. I went to another firm for higher pay and more responsibility, and got laid off 8 months in, along with 12% of the company. LIFO.
Honestly for the amount of work you’re doing, you have a fantastic salary. Take a step back and think about it. Is there more you could be leaning into? Could you speak to some leadership you trust about having capacity and wanting to do more? I find it hard to believe that your leaders are under utilized? Take stuff off their plate and it’ll get you noticed.
I’m always about growth and pushing my self I have been in that place and would rather find something where I’m making an impact and can grow my career
In 5 years what do you want to be doing?
What would you need to do now to get there?
What if most companies laid off 20-30-% of their knowledge workers, what would you be doing then?
What more could I be doing to help others so I feel a sense of accomplishment (giving vs taking)?
These are questions I ask myself.
If I was in your position, I wouldn’t try to find more hours in the current role but rather focus on building other streams of income. Diversifying your income streams will pay off long term, especially in this economy.
At 27 I pushed myself into roles that were as demanding as possible to get more responsibility, grow faster, learn more, and make more money. Complacency is sweet but you can’t coast for too long (unless the organization is dumb enough not to recognize what’s happening…).
You can just use the free time for side projects at work to build a case for promotion. Would that be something you are interested in ?
