Try the admin position pb at a different school and see if it gets better. Pb even go as an admin to middle school. If you see it's not for you, get back to teaching.
Original poster I will answer your question rather than brag that admin support me cause I know that is only for now anyways admin can change on a dime. Apply for admin positions, supervisory positions etc in other districts. Also apply for jobs closer to home so that if you’re going to teach at least you’ll be closer to home. And since you’re planning to leave anyway, meet with your superintendent or even address the board at the next board meeting and state your frustration about this. Half the time it’s the superintendent and the board who want to hire young teachers and admin. Districts don’t want a lot disciplinary records/actions on file. It’s politics-since the mid 70s school boards keep hiring more consultants to implement more programs (like the idiotic pbis and Danielson model for evals) that will improve education and in the meantime our students just get worse. Why can’t we return to basic teaching like back in the 40s 50s all you need to do is look at the older generation they can all read and write and they had strong disciplinary schools.
I disagree. And the comment about the older people and the elections is also false. Most of the extreme right are middle aged and even younger
Find a place closer to home! Don't stay where you're taken for granted! Your experience speaks for itself.
Try a Charter. Public schools always promote their friends from within. If you’re not in the preferred circle you won’t get the job.
This is so true
I married a rocket scientist so I act as if I got nothing too loose and the admin support me. They know I’m not going to suck up for a promotion because I’ve already announced my early retirement
I’d ensure my retirement and apply outside of the district
Some schools always hire from within. Some always go for outside hires. Seems to be part of school culture, and it looks like you're in one that wants outside hires. (Usually that's a red flag. Indicates that someone thinks the staff is a problem.)
Look elsewhere. For admin, if that's what you want. You just need to find another school that wants outside hires.
When I was in early 40s applying for admin I was passed over for the older people. As I got older I was passed over by the younger. I was even in 2nd and 3rd interview rounds. My teaching position was/is difficult to replace. Now, I don’t want all of those extra hours at games, plays, concerts, meetings and approaching retirement. I am supported by admin and on the leadership team—without extra duties.
Posting as someone who coaches new and veteran admin as well as helps to hire: I think you should apply for admin roles! If you feel you have the skills and the passion for this work, you shouldn't let your current job climate dictate your career trajectory. The fact of the matter is, education is ever-evolving, so I do look for qualities like being solution-oriented, taking initiative, being open to feedback, being open to trying new things, and grounding practices in research in hiring. Note: this doesn't mean re-inventing the wheel as much as it does being flexible and adaptive. That said, what these practices can look like in action can differ from leveraging pencil and paper mechanics and organization, to AI and other technology to support today's learning needs. Perhaps it may mean changing your school district or setting to find a school community that fits your needs and isn't led by office politics and possible biases, but either way, all great admin and educators should see value to the evolution of educational practices.
Tex mex they’re just happy they’ll be rid of you soon. So funny to me how a teachers ego blocks their perception of reality!!!
Thanks Tex Mex! Will be keeping this method in mind as I begin my career as a teacher
