I am an unlicensed but experienced veterinary technician and function as surgery tech, pharmacy tech, lab tech and responsible for maintaining all surgical supplies and lab equipment but my manager is asking me to function as a lead/supervisor when they are not there (3 out of 4 days I work). I feel that I need to negotiate a better hourly rate but don’t know how to go about it or how much to ask. I live in Hawaii and my current rate is $19 but our new hire rate (without experience) is $18.

It's understandable that you feel you should be compensated more for the additional responsibilities you have been asked to take on. Here are some tips for negotiating a better hourly rate:

Do some research: Look up the average hourly rate for veterinary technicians in your area with your level of experience and the additional responsibilities you are taking on. This will give you a baseline for what you can reasonably ask for.

Schedule a meeting with your manager: Ask to schedule a meeting with your manager to discuss your compensation. It's important to approach the conversation in a professional and respectful manner.

Highlight your contributions: During the meeting, bring up specific examples of how you have gone above and beyond your duties, such as your ability to function as a lead/supervisor, your experience in various roles, and your contributions to bringing in business. This will help your manager understand why you feel you should be compensated more.

Be prepared to negotiate: Your manager may not agree to your initial proposal, so be prepared to negotiate. Be clear about what you are looking for and be willing to compromise on other factors, such as additional benefits or vacation time.

Follow up: If your manager agrees to a new hourly rate, make sure to follow up in writing to confirm the agreement. If they do not agree to a higher rate, ask for feedback on what you can do to improve your chances of a raise in the future.

As for how much to ask for, it's difficult to give a specific number without knowing more about your experience and the average hourly rate in your area. However, based on your current rate and the additional responsibilities you have taken on, it would be reasonable to ask for a 10-15% increase in your hourly rate.

This is extremely helpful information! Thank you!!

I would suggest negotiating for a high hourly rate . Both position differ from each other. I honestly think there isn’t any formal way to go about it .
Just sit down with them , respectfully tell them that the additional workload that they are wanting you do ( supervisor ) is not part of your current job description and would consider the position if you were properly getting the correct salary for that position . You have to consider it’s an added stress on your plate that you have to worry about . I would think if the manager can be out of the office 3 out of 4 days , they should be able to pay for that .

We are open 7 days a week and each work 4/10s so we only overlap on one day a week.

smart

As a fellow unlicensed tech, I agree that you should sit down with your supervisor and discuss a raise. By taking on more responsibility under a new title, it should be a given to get a change in pay rate. I would ask for a $2 raise personally.

How many yoe do you have in total? You can leverage your yoe and certifications (if any). You should talk to your manager and tell him/her about this matter.

I also think you deserve a much higher hourly rate. Have you tried asking for a raise? In my opinion, a 5-15% increase is reasonable since you have a lot of experience.

Hello, I recently was reached out to by an in-house recruiter at a similar but slightly different company than the one I currently work for. The recruiter provided a base range and an OTE range. The lower end of that range is what I am currently making. The higher end of that range is almost 200k more than my current comp. The role is almost identical. I wasn’t looking to move, but that higher end range would set my family up very nicely for our goals. But I am happy at my current company. Help?

“Job hopper” and “quiet quitting” are all schemes made up by boomers to make you think everything is the employees fault. When in reality people are just getting out of bad situations. Older companies do whatever they can to pay you the least amount and get the max work out of you.
