The market is pretty tough right now, regardless of region. Your best bet would be to try and get your foot in the door internally, if possible. Is that an option?
I was let go due to layoffs so I am hoping that with applying and messaging people in those roles or on the recruiting team I can help make myself stand out.
can you do something like a pmm certificate to show you’ve already started working toward the transition? that’s one way you might be able to get some interviews. otherwise you’ll definitely be facing a lot of challenges right now. also- use your network! if someone else vouches for you with a hiring manager you are more likely to get that interview.
I’m in the same position as you right now. Tried switching internally but my org put a hiring freeze earlier this year and when they reopened the rec, wanted someone with direct PMM experience instead.
I’m doing 2 things: 1, working on PMA (Product Marketing Association) Core certification, and 2, talking with my org’s PMM Director to see if there are projects I can work on to develop experience.
As a CSM, championing a customer case study for one of your customers may be a good way to do this, ideally in partnership with your PMM team.
The market is super tough for product marketing managers. They are looking for perfect matches. I would stick to positions that match your experience and then make a transition once there for awhile.
I'm on the West Coast but the struggle is nationwide since many positions are going remote. Since you have no real PMM experience, your resume will be passed over in the search. Best to get a job with what you know and then start gaining experience to move into a PMM role.
