It’s tough. You have to almost document all of your meetings to make sure there is a mutual understanding of expectations. Otherwise you will continue to have difficulty. This may not set well with the manager because you’re holding them accountable as well.
Have had this happen before, and it was really hard for me! Ideally you would think it is the manager that should be tailoring their communications styles, but nope, not the case for me. Really it came down to me having to think through everything I was going to say and hope it came across right.

I totally get that! It’s frustrating when the communication burden falls on you. It feels like walking on eggshells, trying to phrase things perfectly. Ideally, managers would adapt, but we’re often left figuring it out ourselves.
Yes going through this now it’s so difficult

I am so sorry that you are also experiencing this
I've had several managers that have done that to me, It's not an easy situation to be in, and I ended up leaving or being let go. IE: I had one manager fire me on a Monday at 2:30 in the afternoon because an email I sent out on Friday at 4:45 got hung up in my outbox and didn't send out till 7:55 on Monday morning when I turned on my computer. She fired me for working off the clock....
I
I started doing contract work and then took another full-time job after that, But the business was run so poorly that I was laid off earlier this year. I'm at the age where I've been In so many bad situations that I no longer put up with anything, I fight back, And stick up for myself more. And if I get a bad feeling during an interview, I manage to do or say something that I know that will cut me out of that position.
Yeap. This happen more than we think. I am experiencing with my manager now … well my first. Some managers are very egotistic or have A type personality. They encourage people to speak up, have empathy, all those corporate BS but will use that against you for not being a team player or too weak to lead others. Just be careful not to buy in into that or you will pay for it.
We all know that open door policy is a sure way of getting let go, careful what you say because they hold it against you, they just want you to brown nose and kiss there a...s.
This happened to me, after while it made no sense, I was putting in time and effort and nothing came of it even involved HR. Ultimately I left as it was mentally draining and became toxic.
Ask them when and how they anticipate you meeting those expectations. A manager should be willing to explain this to you.

I think it is really up to the manager to meet you where you are as long as your expectations are realistic. Maybe have a conversation with them, but instead of saying better communication have concrete examples.
Chief
I completely agree! Managers should meet employees halfway, especially if expectations are reasonable.
