I can't seem to get out of the trap of being a presentation designer. I hate the work, but can't seem to jump to anything else, my book has range. I want to go more into branding how do I do that?

@OP Remember, the way to get invited to projects isn’t to make yourself look good. It’s to make someone ELSE look good. Then they’ll want to keep you around for their own selfish sake.

What I’m proposing is working behind the scenes (often without credit) to get ingrained with another team. Let them take the credit. Make it so they can’t succeed without you. Make them addicted to your work. Then your presence will slowly become known.

You may call that “being taken advantage of.” I call it strategy and playing the game. Is it fair? No. Is it how you win? Oftentimes, yes

Can you give me a presentation on why you should do branding?

You’re in a tricky situation for sure, most importantly make your passion known. There is this insane imbalance between what people want and what is possible in the agency world. Yes there are always a lot of dead ends but there are also so many opportunities that go missed because the right person didn’t know that someone wanted something. Be vocal and be buttoned up and god dammit be nice and good things will happen.

Good luck, make it happen.

You have to leave. If your book has a wide range of work and you show a good skill set with a variety of design from branding to campaign design then you’re strong enough to find another job. Clearly where you are doesn’t respect you or want to see you grow, you have to make a jump. Also I would highly suggest doing freelance work on the side to build a client base of work you feel more passionate about, so when interviewing you’re not just showing spec.

It’s pretty common to get labeled at a shop for what THEY think you can do. As CD1 said, you should look for ways to help others look good, and in some cases that means being willing to jump in on the crummy jobs no one else wants so you get to demonstrate your talents. At the same time, you might consider picking up side hustle to pad your book with more and better work you want to be known for, then make additional attempts internally to do the work you desire. If you can’t get recognized, and it happens all the time, you have to start looking elsewhere where you aren’t labeled yet

When I’ve seen people get out of that very common trap, they’ve done it by finding another gig using a book designed to move parallel away from preso design into art direction or graphic design. Tends to b a move over, not up, for career positioning, not a raise.

Then, when u get that gig, don’t ever talk about ur preso design experience, and resist every effort to push u into it.

like

That’s sucks man. I’m sorry to hear it.

Got any side projects up your sleeve?

GD OP I wouldn’t say my book is amazing but I’ve gotten plenty of offers at agencies without previously having connections at agencies, just by reaching out to recruiters or putting my work out there. I haven’t experienced agencies that sequester designers into a sole “presentation designer” role, that seems like a red flag and if they’re not letting you grow I really think the answer is to escape that job no matter how hard it may be.

like

@CD1 Ive been taken advantage of that way several times.

OP...Book? Interested in Production Art? Looking for a conceptual do-it-all production artist. Logos to campaign design to build kits, all of it.

Moving over is totally fine 😂

Thanks for all the replies. I should give more context I started in presentation design and moved to more digital design roles then transitioned (no pun intended) to music packaging design then got laid off from the music company due to restructuring. I feel like I'm at step 1 again. Having the slowest freelance ever. Then started getting gigs showing my presentation work.

Unpaid photography projects, a book design, a personal brand for a tarot reader. They're fun and require me to stretch my skills. It doesn't pay the rent unfortunately. I don't have enough connections to get to Collins.

GD OP Woah now who says Collins or bust? That’s like above Pentagram right now in terms of people’s dream job. There’s plenty of wonderful places to work within shooting distance for you. I’m just saying an ad agency or potentially branding agency where you can design things not just pump out presentations. It sounds like you’re trapped in PR if that’s what you’re doing.

@designer1 Nope trapped in advertising, I went client side but now I feel like I'm taking a step back to pay my rent. I find it limiting and Collins was just an example of types of firms I don't have a lot of connections to. Even I've said networking is the way in but no one will recommend you if they've met you once at a mixer.

@designer1 Glad those things are working for you. They haven't done me a bit of good. I've had almost no success with recuriters, I could plaster my portfolio everywhere and still get lost in the firehose of other peoples stuff plus in NYC the competition is brutal. Sorry rent still has to get paid.

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

Need advice on a specific question!
Interviewed with Chicago court 2 weeks ago; they decide mid-August. Interviewed with DC judge last week; hear from him by this Friday. Chicago said if I need an answer before August, they'd try to make a decision about me sooner.
Should I ask Chicago for an answer? Or should I wait until there's an offer from DC judge? Maybe seems better to withdraw before an offer is made rather than ask for time to think about it/turn down DC? What's proper etiquette?
