I currently take 20mg of adderall daily. It helps me focus and I do see a huge difference in my productivity vs days I do not take my medication but I really don’t like how it makes me feel. I am unable to eat or sleep well and get awful migraines. Has anyone had any luck with different supplements or ways to boost focus without medication?

Your dosage sounds too high (and/or you might be taking in too much caffeine, not drinking enough water, etc). You can try playing with XR vs instant, breaking up dosage, etc.

I wasn’t able to brute force “normalcy” through meds alone. I had to restructure the way I work to take advantage of my particular quibbles (and minimize my weaknesses).

like

You can try taking (2) 10mg ER; or taking a 10mg instant & a second dose 4 hours later.

I made an excel spreadsheet tracking dosage/times, plus intake of food, water, caffeine, and mood. (Waited until hyper focus kicked in to build that sucker). With that in hand, my doctor was much more relaxed about letting me frequently switch up dosages until I found what worked.

helpful

A lot of people I know switched to Vyvanse and said it was a lot smoother with less side effects. Vyvanse was horrible for me but I don’t know of anyone else who hasn’t liked it much better. But agree with SC1 that it could also be your dosage is too high, or maybe you would do better with IR vs XR.

like

Vyvanse is a methylphenidate. Adderall is an amphetamine. Both stimulants but different chemical makeup.

Green tea brother. Cut out coffee too. Green tea has an amino acid called L Theanine. Helps with focus and cognitive function. You might want to drink like 3 cups in a day. I used to be prescribed ADD meds. The anxiety and lack of appetite used to kill me.

like

Yea the herbal teas like Chamomile and Mint are great for anxiety. I drink those at night.

That would happen to me - I took it as needed (0-2 days per week) do it took a while to get used to it but it seemed as though the effects were a little unpredictable. I tried drinking lots of water and using a electrolyte mix when needed in addition to eating meals at regular times but sometimes I still felt sick at the end of the day. I take vyvanse now and prefer it though it did take some getting used to

Agreed with others saying to try a lower dose of Adderall IR or Vyvanse. I have insomnia issues and IR works a lot better for me because the Adderall can largely be out of my system by bedtime, and my appetite returns in the evenings well enough to eat dinner.

When I was on Adderall XR, I mitigated the appetite & sleep issues with an antidepressant that was known to make you drowsy and hungry LOL. I switched to Jornay PM, which feels smoother and more consistent. I like that you can take it in the evening and you wake up when it activates 12ish hours later feeling energized. No crashes.

One of my frustrations with myself (writing it out here so I can work on it) is that I will print out something that I need, such as a traffic collision report. I will read it without actually reading it. This results in spending time without actually retaining info. Does this happen to anyone else? I’ve found that I can actually focus when I truly force myself, but often this happens after I’ve discovered an error or an important piece of information that I should have noticed earlier.
