I failed in interviews with Deloitte and EY for audit staff positions. I applied for all audit positions available but these are the only 2 companies that called me for interviews in the past 5 months. I think I should give up public accounting as I can't find a way to get in though I tried my best. With CPA, is public accounting the best career path for me or private accounting can still offer me a fast career progression?

I had my second technical interview two weeks ago and I had emailed the recruiter to check for any progress on my application. I just received an email saying they want to talk to me over call. Should I be worried? Given the hiring freeze .. I am a little worked up. I mean, I would surely talk to her soon to know the situation but my anxiety is off the charts. I got rejected for an interview from Big 4 NY Audit, even had referrals from Manager + level people. 3 years w/ audit senior at mid size firm, 2 years fed tax at big 4, and 1.5 years Internal Audit healthcare. Currently self employed for a year to work on investing. Do I literally need a partner level referral to get back into Audit? I thought there was an accountant shortage.
