What do you feel like you’re missing? Sounds like you have good pay and growth where you’re at with better WLB
We’re a 6 man shop and the managing partner is retiring soon. He generates the most revenue and brings in the bigger ($100m+ revenue) clients. Without him, I don’t really see a future here.
Be patient, try harder, network. Particularly try networking in-person once everything opens back up.
I met a guy in a coffee shop once, while studying for the CFA. We both were, and started a convo. 4 years later that same guy referred me for a mid-level role at a PE MF, where i currently work.
I was at a no-name boutique when I met him, and was still at another no-name shop when I got referred into it.
I was at a no-name boutique - but lateraled into a MM firm as a 3rd year analyst (didn’t lose a year). It’s definitely possible - you just need to regularly apply for openings. PE recruitment was a no-go aside from LMM PE.
Frankly I just don’t want to do banking anymore though. I’d much rather take a chill FP&A job and I can’t even get interviews for those.
It’s definitely tough. I was in the same spot. I’ve had many recruiters note that I’m competing against BB guys for the same spot. You just have to keep grinding or consider MBA to get that “stamp of approval”.
I was in LMM PE then Corp Dev
BB - bulge bracket, the largest banks
I cannot believe one second that you have not develop your own personal network with clients / other shops? I am sure you initiate some discussions with them to see if there are opportunities for you to lateral/buyside? No name boutique has nothing to do with you not getting interview except if applying to shops where they only take from BB because of the formatting
I mean, our clients aren’t large companies. There’s really no good opportunities with them.
