I think you could tell HR just so they can laugh you out od the office. In this industry, money knows no gender. We have our top producers rotate from male to female every year.
I’m afraid to ask your age. Here’s the thing, my generation 53 year old raised entitled kids that have now become entitled adults. This is not little league soccer where every player received a trophy. It’s not fair. You should be so busy networking and bringing in clients that you don't have time to look out that window. Use the conference room for now. Be hungry. That guy will never appreciate that office because he did not earn it. You will. Work hard, make your numbers THEN walk in and get your window office. Focus on what’s important and not the pettiness. You got this! 😎👩🏻🔧
Exact same experience, references, licenses, ect? Or you could just bust ass and earn a better office? How well is your book building while sitting around wondering why you can’t have a window and a male does?
There’s a 93% fall out rate in this business. If you’re sitting around worried about where you park your rear instead of getting clients, you won’t be around long. Get enough clients and get your own office.
Then maybe take the standpoint of, “I have a good book of business and would like to look professional. Are there any more offices available?” It’s easy to make a lot of assumptions, especially in the world we live in. If you don’t like the answer, there’s plenty of other firms looking for experienced advisors. Let capitalism run things, it does it better anyway.
OP - seriously though - ppl are coming down hard on you but keep your head up, work hard, and try to help people. You will do fine, if it doesn’t work out for you where you are at check out Edward Jones - we are most likely hiring where you are at and have THE BEST training program for new FAs - other firms are good places to work and can help clients just like EDJ can but EDJ has probly helped more FAs go from new to established FAs then any firm (most firms just steal each others existing successful FAs and their trainees flunk out (that’s what happened to me before joining EDJ 5 plus years ago)) EDJs fall out rate is much less than 93%
Put your head down and go to work. Size of office or location does not determine your potential. Hard, honest work will prove your worth to your clients as well as company
Could he have been hired earlier in the day and given the option for the office or cube and he took the office?
This has been the most interesting and rather important discussion since I joined the bowl! So OP, what are you planning to do?
Be careful what you ask for...he (or she) who has the office has a higher cost thus expectation to deliver. Forget the office. Grow your assets and you’ll take his and his office
Honestly it probably has less to do with gender and more to do with his personal or family connections. You may not want to talk to HR because the person in HR might be his family friend! Everything in life comes down to who you know and nepotism is rampant all over the world so there's a good chance that someone in his social circle was connected to someone else and that's how he got the job and the office too. If it were the other way around and you had the office and he had the cubicle there would be talking behind your back saying you were doing things to get special treatment
My first coach in minor league baseball said it best... “you don’t like the amount of playing time you’re getting? Play better.”
Yes
If all things are equal, don’t worry about it!!! Every second of thought you give it is the reason why he is already out working you and deserves it more. Bust your hump and prove them wrong
I’m trying to be helpful and constructive. Pretty much everyone in this field is some sort of nerd, not sure where that came from.... Im talking about an introvert vs an extrovert. Sometimes a good manager will intentionally put introverts or more socially awkward employees in the cubicle setting rather than a private office because it forces them to interact socially and mix/mingle with others. It’s a way to gently force the introvert to interact because often an introvert tends to unintentionally hide out in their office where it’s naturally more comfortable for them to stay in their bubble.
Meanwhile, an extrovert will more naturally meet and interact with those around him or her regardless of where he or she sits during the day. They introduce themselves, forge friendships easily, etc. This generally contributes to good morale and happiness amongst employee groups.
I had a manager that did this in a setting where it was crucial the everyone got along and interacted well. I have no idea obviously if this is the case here, I’m simply offering a possibility other than rampant sexism.
Introverts with few exceptions survive this industry ...unless to work for an extrovert.
You shouldn’t even be spending time in the office. All firms eagerly want to promote women advisors, so if you work hard and bring in assets, you will have more opportunity thrown at you than you know what to do with. 15 years from now, you’ll cringe that these were the things you were concerned with.
I would advise my daughter if she were in the business to approach HR and ask if additional offices available. It may be a sign of a pattern of career limiting barriers or it may just be the luck of the draw. Learn which it is and make decisions accordingly! Good luck!
Maybe he is bringing more to the company? More assets, experience, etc? Sure it would cross my mind if I were you but I wouldn't bet the farm it is or isnt sexism. Even if you're 100% carbon copies except for your sex, someone gets the office and someone gets the cube.
I prefer cubicle.. less pressure and opportunity to move up
There are lots of things that are unfair in life, like why is my brother taller and more handsome then me? I mean we were made by the same two people?? It’s a joke, but the point is that like some of the posts mentioned above, worry about things you can control, use this to motivate you and prove to them that they made the mistake of giving that guy the office (for whatever reason). Have a chip on your shoulder and go kick some butt. there will be a corner office waiting for you when you become a big producer.
I would be annoyed too but taking it up the ladder will hurt you more than it will help you. Unless you feel that your desk situation will hinder your ability to bring in business, and as long as they provide professional conference room that you can use then it won’t, you have to work through this. When you make it to the top you can ensure this type of things doesn’t happen under your watch.
Accept it or they will terminate you later. How this business works. Find a company that really values employees who work hard and you will succeed .
Ok,but where did he come from? What are your backgrounds? Did you arrive from the same direction?
