It’s going to suck in a few years once you’re older - by then you’ve seen it all, the politics, the insecurities, the same s**t in cycles and stupidities that make consultants work needlessly crazy hours to tweak a deck that could’ve been fine 5 versions and 5 hours ago at 6PM.
You’re peers will be excited, passionate, and driven while you’ll look like this jaded know-it-all who people will wonder why you never progressed.
You’ll get older, your pace, your health and needs from life will change, your bosses will get younger by the day and you will remain as unempowered as you were when you started.
Suddenly the $180K won’t feel as exciting ;)
I could be wrong
SP1 - find a company or career model where tenure based progression or up or out are not the only options. Technical roles, architecture, specialist roles tend to be like that.
I keep hearing Alix Partners supports it, within Accenture the Innovation & Thought Leadership career model supported it. Some of Accenture acquisitions that are known for their deep technical expertise tend to be like that too.
Come to AlixPartners, no up or out, just do good client work!
Memorable client work. Good doesn’t usually get it done. ;-)
IBM lets you stay at level as long as you want
Depends I guess, my leadership has actively helped me get promoted
How do I go back to SA?
Non-US fish here. How strong is the "up or out" in the US firm? I've heard rumours of "up or on plus" letting people stay in grade for years.
@PwC2 - there is a finite amount of time at S& where you can stay at the same staff class before being pushed out of the firm. Hence “up or out”.
Is it really 180K base now? I was at 147 when I joined
Have you seen this happen? Former intern myself and have heard mixed messages on this
Had no idea S& was this way
It’s why we can keep getting paid
I agree SC is the sweetest level, esp b/c S& pays 180 for it.
LEK is pretty flexible with staying longer at any given level
Yea but LEK has a whole lot of other issues...great if u like CDDs and writing research papers tho
You want federal consulting
Yeah but as you get married, buy a house, kids starting growing up... will the $180k be Ok?
It does, don’t get me wrong. It’s made for some awesome and memorable family trips + they get my full and undivided attention on the weekend. Doesn’t hurt that I work from home Friday, too.
You clearly never thought about business models....
