I have a job interview coming up. It’s for the county I live in. The probation period is 6 months! Is that crazy to anyone else? I may be stuck in my corporate mindset where you can literally work a few days and then take off as long as it’s approved.

I’ve worked in local government for almost 12 years. We have a probationary period of 1 year. That is very common for government agencies, but they usually are not strict with leave policies. You can start a job with pre planned vacations & life happens, things come up.

I have worked for the county for several years and on my third county currently. 6 months is standard. the current county I’m at is 12 months. I’ve always taken time off during my probation period, As long as you have the PTO.

I too have been burned by this probationary period. I worked for the state for 3 months at a local university after being laid off around 2008 at the county's financial crisis. I asked my boss shortly before I had a meeting with the university Provost how I was doing and he mentioned everything seems to be fine. I then had my meeting with the Provost and mentioned during my meeting that I was friends with a large donator to the university. Unknown to me was that the large donator and the Chancellor of the university had a "falling out". The day after my meeting I was fired. They made up a reason that wasn't true and the union couldn't do anything about it because it was in the probationary period. Took me over a year to find work again and was the hardest time of my life. Union didn't have a problem collecting my dues during the time though.

Just letting you know the things to be aware of when getting into a situation like this. They hold all the cards.

Moral of the story, do your job well and don't drop names.

I have worked in local government my entire career and six months is standard practice. There is no red flag here. If you do your job and show up to work everyday passing that probation period is almost an automatic. In fact, so state governments do a year probation. if it’s something you love doing don’t let the extreme circumstances list on here or the uninformed commentary sway you. Good Luck!

like

In government 6-12 month probationary period is typical, especially in a Union job. The theme here seems to be to NOT talk about anyone else in the interview as you never know what feelings, facts or perceptions might be. Keep it focused on you.

Every job I have had over 45 years of working has had at least a 6 month probation period. Time off can be used as earned or in the case where I knew I needed time off during the probation period I got it approved when I got hired (in writing).

like

That perspective is understandable. But that's just it...perspective. Look at it from a different perspective. View this time as the opportunity to prove your work ethic and most importantly love what you're doing. The time will fly by.

like

I've worked for my local government for 18 + years; a 6-month probationary period has been the standard for at least that long. However, staff have always had access to their accrued PTO throughout that period (and they begin accruing after their first 1st pay period). Refusing to allow employees access to their PTO is archaic. It's a great way to shoot yourself in the foot as an employer in terms of recruiting & retaining high-quality employees.

It immediately sends the message that employees' personal lives aren't as important as the job- any manager or employer worth their salt knows that what's going on in an employee's personal life WILL eventually impact their work performance.

I work for a government agency, our probation period is 1 year, but you do not receive any Annual Leave until 6 months.

like

Do you mean you can’t take leave until your probationary period is complete? My job had a 2 year probationary period but I could take leave as soon as it accrued (per pay period)

like

Though I would suggest you be judicious in taking it. Being there -- early on -- is the best idea when you can do that.

Also, be sure to accrue some leave before you start taking it.

The county I worked for has a 9 month probationary period. Be careful

like

No it’s not crazy most government probation periods are now 2yrs

like

Mine was. I resigned before I made mine.

I am in Canada and with companies the usual probation period is 3 months which is also the law in most provinces. During the probation period they can let you go without cause. I worked with one government agency and their probation period was 6 months for a 1 year term position. I now have a government job where the probation period is 1 year for a 3 year term but every year they are talking about layoffs. Unless there is a drastic shortage of employees, I suspect most employers will have employees as basically part-time, casual. If the employee finds a better jobs and leaves, they will say, "No one wants to work anymore!"

like

I’ve seen not only 12-month probationary periods but also where you have to start a new 12-month probationary period if you get promoted, even within your own department, because it’s a “new position.“ That’s what gets me.

like

Pretty standard. I had a job offer for a city job and it was 6 months probation too

like

I worked for a township where I live and they had it at 6 months. Also they had it in the union contract that they can extend it another 6 months for whatever reason they want, so the jerk manager extended every new employee so that they had a year probation just because he felt like it and to make it easier for him to get rid of people and the union just let him.

like

My union contract states an internal move is subject to a 6 month probationary period or 1 year if you’re an external hire! I’ve worked at 2 different counties and they were both the same. That is pretty crazy

like

You can always do temp jobs where you can say yes or no to.

like

I work for the State of Ohio and our agency is one year probation.

like

I did too back in the 1980s and my probation with the State Attorney Generals office back then was one year.

like

Yeah, 6 months is pretty standard for county jobs. It’s just a probation period to make sure everything’s a good fit. Honestly, it went by smooth for me.

I recently joined Swiss Re at 30lpa, pretty good manager and work culture. Got a hike of 10% in 3 months without me asking for it. But got an offer from another company which I was interviewing for before joining here and they are offering a base of 45lpa. Now I am unsure how I convey this to my manager coz I want to stay here but at the same time I am salivating over this new offer and wish I get similar numbers here. Is it worth raising a discussion? If yes what would be a subtle way to do so?

Question to Interviewers:

Do you get informed if the person you interviewed joined the company or not?

How would you feel if many of the candidates you interviewed with positive feedback didn’t join the company?

Do companies measure time wasted interviewing candidates who didn’t join?

Just curious to know.
