I have received an offer from my current client. Great benefits, 70 % raise and I'll be leading a team of 4-5 people ( I am currently staff at EY). I want to take the offer, but I am scared that Contd

Congratulations, take it

70% sounds compelling enough for me, if you’re really interested in the industry I’d take it and leave. I don’t think it’s going to make it harder for you to come back people always come and go.

Take it. 70% is a LOT of money unless you got a trust fund or something

likefunny

If you leave on good terms, your old firm will always take you back.

like

There are boomerangs all the time in most firms. Left my firm and they told me I’m welcomed back anytime. Just make sure you leave on good terms

like

Leaving for industry will make it hard for me to come back to consulting if I ever change my mind. Has anyone here left consulting and regretted it? Were you able to go back to your firm afterwards?

like

I don’t think it should be that difficult to return to consulting as an SME or someone with strong relationships with a client, I know plenty of people who moved back and forth from industry to consulting. Maybe your relationships at EY will be affected, but EY itself is huge and has plenty of other entry ops and there are several other consulting firms who would appreciate taking someone with industry and consulting experience.

like

Oh didn’t read that it was for a current client. It was frowned upon in my circumstance (similar offer) so I would get advice from people you trust at EY on that perception. Ended up not taking the offer and still regret it now lol

like

If you like the industry and like the work culture at your current client, you should take it. I personally haven’t heard a person being bashed because they left for a client. In any event, they should be happy that you’ll potentially be a buyer of your current firm’s services, at some point.

like

Take it. Considering you're a staff probably ~70k. 120k is a very significant jump and an outstanding salary that you probably won't see til you make M1 at EY

like

Congrtualuons. You got promoted to client.

like

Take it dude. Just take it. Take the damn thing!!!!

likefunny

Everyone talks about it being frowned upon by leadership, but as long as you’re not on a blacklist or something people forget and leadership switches as well.

like

Sounds like a great opportunity. As long as you keep your skills sharp and elevate within the new organization you should have options to return to consulting, even if EY doesn't take you back there are plenty of other firms out there.

like

OP what’s your salary now? If the % bump is high bc you’re being underpaid then I would leave bc it would be hard to catch up even as you move up

like

If you offer is $115K, I doubt you will get to $115K until mid-way through the Senior track

I've done it before. Then came back to Accenture. It'll be ok Op.

like

Take it. It would be amazingly short sighted for your firm to frown upon you leaving for a client or not to hire you back in the future because of it. Especially for that kind of salary bump. Just stay in touch with the people who support you. Network is everything.

like

Never let fear drive your decisions. Or money. If the role is great and you’ll learn and grow a lot in a healthy environment, go for. There will always be a place in consulting (or any industry) for smart, capable people.

likesmart

I think it depends on the firm and honestly the practice. I know people that left for the client and it was completely fine, but in some cases like mine it was frowned upon by my leadership bc they were essentially losing a major project pipeline by me going to the client side. That said, I was under terrible leadership and ended up leaving anyways (not for the client which I wish I did)

helpful

Dude just go. People get it. You're being paid way more. It's your life.

likesmart

Take it!

like

I left my first firm at a really shitty time on my project and for my practice but DGAF. You’d think that would be on bad terms but they still try to re-recruit me all the time now that I’m back in consulting. So many people get burned out that it’s easier than you’d think to come back.

I joined a project that had already started and the team already settled on creating a user journey map, even though none of them are designers or in ux. I also have no experience in this field as I'm a data engineer. The user journey map was for mapping out the process for tenants finding housing assistance, so not a technical product. Given this new field and type of work, I've been having a really tough time. Anyone mind sharing what helped get you through your first ux project?

Hey guys, I’m a freelance broadcast producer and I’ve spent most of my career working for larger agencies. I’m doing something for a smaller agency and they want the production company to hide costs in their bid and then have production bill the client the inflated amount directly and pay the hidden costs to the agency. The agency is calling it a “consultation fee” but client just thinks production costs more. Is that common and I just haven’t experienced it before? Or is this a big red flag?
