I hit my initial bonus threshold (1900 hours) but I missed a discretionary bonus target (2200) by just five hours! :( Has this happened to anyone before? Any chance my firm will round up for good performance?

Ask someone at your firm (mentor or partner). No clue. But if they dont give you that bonus, or pro rate it, consider lateraling elsewhere.

like

I missed bonus by 10 hours once. (Was looking at the wrong metric—thanks for the wrong info senior associate!) Got nothing. Can you find 5 hours somewhere? Some weekend pro bono work you forgot to record? Some billable time you never transferred from a temporary number? Something more plausible?

like

IME they send around an email with a cutoff date.

What’s the difference between the two?

So does the "discretionary" part mean that not everybody who hits 2200 gets it? Because in that case, I find it unlikely they'll just round up. In my experience, the hours cut-off for the top performer bonuses is a minimum requirement, meant sort of as an administratively efficient way of narrowing the pool, within which the firm may then select a few folks to reward. The point isn't really to reward the top associates anyway--it's to incentivize folks already billing a lot to bill even more.

like

Should have just pre-billed 5 hours to a matter

OP can’t justify the 25h workday tho

Is this how it will always be? Or is this predominantly because I am in lower positions at this point in my career?

How can I sell my 2 years of clerkship as valuable experience for corporate work? I would like to get credit for at least one year (at least in salary, if I can’t in seniority). I know for litigation they are more clearly valued and linked to that type of work, but I have reconsidered my interests and now am thinking of going into corp. However, I don’t want to feel like I wasted 2 years clerking (which I don’t feel like that, but I have to convince an employer of that too). Any help or insight?

Texans. Just got an offer from a V10 to relocate down and do litigation. Excited but the offer was 20k below market. Talked to managing partner and they said it’s the market in Houston so if I can find other firms paying full market they will raise it since I’ll be the only jr. - mid level. So give me names, who pays cravath in Houston?

Just started in Biglaw as a first year - one of the partners made a passing remark that he couldn’t remember my PQE but thinks I’m “the same as X associate”. Went on LinkedIn and saw that X associate is a third year. How do I gently correct this misconception in a future conversation?

I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. That said getting to know people only remote has been kind of awkward at times (email only can be tough to decipher) although as a working mom the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Yesterday my main partner asked me to come in Thursday bc he will be there and set a time to meet. Is this good/bad?? kind of nervous!

Turns out job wasn’t as advertised. Mutual parting of ways 3/22. Due diligence is critical.
Now interviewing a LOT. Some temp work, I still have “it”. I relate to all gens. Willing to mentor AND learn from all. Tech savvy, CTE from day one. Leads?
