I interviewed for a principal TPM role at Amazon and was told that I am better suited for a non-tech PM role level 6. I am kind of bummed as non-technical roles don’t pay that well and that’s not the direction I want my career to take as well.
Admittedly, I don’t have a super-technical background myself. So what should I do now? Should I continue for the non-technical role because it’s the Amazon or just let it go and re-apply within 6 months. My current total comp is $210k.

I can almost guarantee that your comp offer will be under what you make now, based on my experience internal to Amazon so far.

In Ops as an L6 I make 185k TC, so I’d assume about 200-220k TC at least?

like

If you don’t have a highly technical background then the hiring assessment is correct in this case - you are not a good fit for a L6 (leave alone L7) TPM role. I would suggest gaining enough hands-on tech experience in your area and then applying for L6 TPM.

What is the proposed salary at Amazon?

My interview is yet to be scheduled

What’s your background / how technical are you? Have you designed or built systems/ETLs?

I do want tpm role though :) so how do I proceed from here? Any certifications that you would recommend?

In order to succeed as a tpm, you will need to continuously grow your technical acumen. You should shoot for structured courses on relevant topics, native aws design concepts mastery, and even program a little to understand the nature of how the solutions work. This is a lot of doing for those without an education in tech, however it can be done if you consistently keep the goal and iteratively add to your tool belt.

I’ve worked really hard and I’m worried our wonderful news will throw chances with this :(- also if I don’t get promoted pretty sure it’s up or out. Any advice?

Should I stay at a company I know I like culture-wise when my manager said they will try to promote me, but with no guarantee. Or should I take a job offer I was given with a nice raise, but is in consulting at Slalom. I have not worked in consulting before. There is no travel with Slalom, but the idea of being the new person all the time isn’t too appealing. Less pay and known culture, or more pay unknown job satisfaction?
