Say you’re an Assurance Senior 3 and want to transfer soon as you hit Manager back to your hometown office. Should you secure the manager promotion at your current office first or go ahead and initiate the transfer at S3? I’m scared that they won’t accept me over their current S3s and so I think the safer bet is to make manager first then transfer. Deloitte EY PwC
Also, how desperate are firms for Managers these days? I know seniors and staff are in demand but I rarely hear about Managers.

YOE does not equate to being ready for certain roles. What kind of feedback did they provide when it was communicated that you weren’t ready?
My manager told me he is using me as a Senior. Feedback won't be available after three. So still don't know yet.

I have worked with a lot of experienced hires at Deloitte and there has been a consistent difference between let’s say an A2 who started at Deloitte and an external hire A2, same at any level. I think each firm has its own way of doing things when it comes to work and it takes time to learn those things so they may not feel like you have 100% caught on to the “Deloitte way”. Think of it this way every firm may do control testing but the way each firm will do it will be very different. There is no way with all my Deloitte experience that I could walk into another big 4 and perform equally to my level even after 6 months. It takes time. Be patient and if you feel you need to jump firms for better opportunities then do it!!!!!

I appreciate all the advice and comments! I did start in an international big four and did a Master program in the US. Upon graduation, I joined a local CPA firm and worked there for a year and then started with Deloitte. By now, I have 3 YOE. I understand each firm may have their ways of working with different approaches, but that should not be the reason I would "perform" differently. If you can learn, be flexible, and have the mindset to address the issues effectively, that shouldn't be something to get in your way. I am seeing my senior doesn’t know his tasks and often need me to explain why we test this and why it addresses risks. I supervise two staff who perform totally differently. One is always thinking and getting things done and the other never knows how to apply what he learns to similar tasks. That's my moment that if I am judging myself like others to just think about YOEs with assessing my own capabilities, is that responsible for myself?

Non B4 experience is discounted from YOE. Sometimes international experience is also discounted depending on the office/country. The fact that you’ve moved around so much can also be viewed as a negative as people assume there is onboarding/ramp-up time that takes away from YOE.
When they said they don’t think you can handle the senior responsibilities, what specific examples did they give on why you’re not ready? Did you give examples of why you think you are? YOE isn’t the only factor. If you can demonstrate that you can and have performed at the next level, that is what is relevant. The fact that you’ve only been here 6 mos isn’t great as you’ve likely not had the time to prove yourself.
Are you scheduled on a large audit client for busy season where you’d be the audit in-charge?
Talk to the managers that you’ve worked for. Reach out to your coach. Maybe connect with the partner. Listen to what they are saying.
In the end you have to decide what you want. Personally I don’t think it looks good to switch jobs so often. If I’m interviewing someone and they keep hopping every year, it’s not a good sign. I’d be hard pressed to entertain meeting with someone who only spent 6 months at their last job except under special circumstances.
Go to EY buddy. I’m sure you’ll have more success there as the culture/politics is “so much different” lol.
