I can't stand resentful or jealous coworkers. We all work our butts off everyday, why can't we all support each other when we need or earn a break? I love to hear about my coworkers' trips and help them when they finally get to take some much deserved PTO. They do the same for me. It's called teamwork!
I would say with all honesty take your pto when you need to, everyone else and those opinions do not matter

Screw them. You can take your time.
That’s right
I'm not sure taking PTO is supported, but I wouldn't say it's actively discouraged like that either. Absences can/do increase our individual workloads, but most people realize time off is essential for all of our mental health, so I don't think there's any personal resentment toward anyone who takes it. If anything, it's directed at management for understaffing to the point that one person being out for a week is such an inconvenience.
With my immediate coworkers I wouldn't say they support people taking time off. But nobody really hassles you over it. That's pretty annoying, though in fairness some people may just mean it in a joking way.
Elevance is a slave warehouse thats number driven.
They definitely dont support people with disabilities! Stay away!!!
When someone in this department comes back from a week or two-week vacation, you can almost be certain two or three will say something -- like going up to them and saying, "Hi. My name's Robert. It's good to meet you. Welcome aboard." I wouldn't call it "passive aggressive." They know they'll get their turn soon. As the manager, I would step in if anyone started being a bit too "bitchy."
It really surprises me why taking your hard-earned PTO is such a taboo in most workplaces. You find some coworkers even afraid to take time off because it's even discouraged by leadership that maintains you should care only about work all the time. My current job has a use it or lose it policy. They will even schedule it for you by the end of the year if you haven't used your PTO.
To me Pto is like vacation pay. Health care workers always should use pto for their mental health
It sounds like the place you work is short staffed which is the norm in many places. It's not that they are mad at you, but mad at having to work harder when you are off. Very common unfortunately. If short staffing is not the case, then who knows why everyone is griping!
My former company gave us 3 personal days/yr. I took mine without much notice when my granddaughter was born and needed to be in the NICU - to support my son and dil. Upon my return received dirty looks, passive/aggressive comments from several of my coworkers. It taught me a great lesson- these people were not my friends and I couldn’t count on them for support. Family trumps work!!!
Family first - always!
They can take PTO too. I wouldn't give that a second thought. Apparently they need a mental health day if that is what they are doing. I would schedule more time off ASAP. Give something else to talk about.
Exactly. I would only care about myself. We all need vacation if not all healthcare workers wouod get burnt out.

Eh...it's probably misplaced. They aren't likely upset you took the PTO and may just be venting now you are back. Employers don't always cover the gap when an employee is on PTO. Your coworkers likely picked up your work while you were gone.
Sorry to hear that! Our workplace encourages taking PTO for work-life balance. It's important for everyone to feel supported. Maybe address the comments directly or speak to HR if it continues.
Yes. Unfortunately, such behavior is a result of a few things: Poor management, a lack of understanding of the purpose of work, a failure to understand work-life balance and a misunderstanding of the term teamwork.
Having been a staff member and a manager, the manager has responsibility to develop/monitor the culture of the work environment. Passive aggressive behavior is not OK in the work setting. It is actually a form of bullying. PTO is a company benefit given to workers and it is expected that staff will use it according to organization's policies. Again, managers have the responsibility to see that policies are followed. People work to exchange their skills/knowledge for money which they use for their life goals (self & family). Teamwork makes the work environment produce the product or service expected of the worksite. Not one person or a few people, it takes a team for productive outcome. Perhaps using a sport analogy is helpful. How does a basketball team or football team win if every player does perform his role on the team? It is the same in the workplace. Staff are expected to use time off to return to work ready to perform appropriately. Overworked team members make errors which can be dangerous or costly to the team members or the clients served. Management of the organization has responsibility to provide or secure this education for their employees.
I realize how that they chronicle staffing challenges in the healthcare industry. As a retired healthcare worker i throught about helping out with patients care but i am afraid of the criticism and talks behind my back from the workers.
Temporarily ignore it, don't get caught up in it and it should temper off over time. However, if it does not and it is interfering with your work then talk with your supervisor (unless they are part of the problem) or HR. Most people have some temporary jealousy and it usually passes.
We have a person who is fairly new and has been out for longer than they worked there. We are just concerned and wondering when the position will be filled. So a little aggravation at the short staffed nature of it, but definetely worried (at least I am) about my co-workers health.
I can say this… Take the time off that you need to and don’t worry about what others are saying. At my employer, there is this one lady who constantly takes off 2-3 weeks and no her work stays getting dumped on us. By the time she gets back she is complaining and putting more time on the books so she is never really caught up on work…Meanwhile if i take a week off, my work does not get transferred to anyone else. In fact I will steadily have work assigned to me… Mgmt refuses to see there is a need for more people so for me I am currently starting to look for other employment. I don’t care who takes pto but if therr is a person or 2 that just abuses like the lady i have at work, it does get annoying.
No mine does not
It seems there is always a short staff situation.
Management has fostered an atmosphere of anxist against even asking for time off
We are all so happy for each other to escape for a bit and when someone returns we want to hear all about it. I'm not saying this to make you feel worse, but rather to emphasize how important it is to support each other's mental health and life balance. If it bothers you (and I hope you won't let it) have a response ready like, "don't you have any PTO?"
A director of a completely different department than mine tried to write me up when I had to stay home for a week when my 3 month old, 5 year old, and I all tested positive for Covid. Baby also tested positive for RSV. This was a couple of months after asking me to return to work 4 weeks after giving birth. 🙄
