Forgot to update - they gave me what i asked for and accepted the job!
Thank you! I initially did it over email then they called me and we discussed over the phone. I thanked them and was very respectful about it
I think only you know where you stand as far as how hard you can push. In 90 percent of cases they are not offering multiple people one job - they have their hopes on you. You have obviously impressed, and I don’t think they want to lose their number one choice over 5k when that represents a minuscule piece of their overall revenue. It really depends on your risk appetite. If you really want the job, don’t push. If you think you are worth more, fight for it.
That's why I never give a range. If you give a range, and they give you an amount on the low end, you can't really complain. Why would they volunteer to give you more unless what you're asking is way below market. Just give one number and they will adjust it if needed. You position yourself better for negotiations this way.
Propose a counter offer and explain why you feel that you are justified the counter offer versus their offer.
Did you communicate the salary you wanted beforehand? Went through a similar situation where I said the salary I wanted to make, they offered 10k less after interviews, I replied saying I wanted x salary, and they came all the way up. They will pay you the minimum amount they can that you will accept.
Should I do that via email or phone call? And what if this amount falls within the range we discussed just on the lower end?
I’ll just use random numbers as an example : i told them I wanted to make between 25k - 35k and they offered me 25k. I said 25k - 35k hoping they’d meet in the middle at 30k. How do you think I should approach this?
That's why don't give a range. Just tell them one number. If they really like you, they will bring it down if you asked for too much. But if you ask for too little, that's what you will get.
I’d say given that I’m giving up a raise at my previous firm and the bonus associated with it if you can meet in the middle at 30k that would work. That’s basically what I did and they came back at 35k.
I haven’t mentioned the bonus or raise to the new company would it be like out of nowhere If I suddenly do? Honestly I’m a very confident person but when it comes to salary talk I’m not good at all. I’m afraid of ruining a possible opportunity.
Also thank you so much for your input tax senior manager 1.
