I would go just to be seen , remember , it's not who you know , it’s who knows you , can you get a hotel close to party and drive hone later ?
Since it's your first year, I would just go to make appearances. Not a huge deal, and you don't have to stay very long. But refusing to go when you're new to the company might make you look standoffish and unfriendly.
Two years ago I joined the week before the holiday party and went. Normally introverted so I was going to go for an hour to say hello and leave. Ended up being a great way to meet everyone and turned out to be a very late party night. You never know.
Networking at the workplace, even if casual, is essential for your career. Holiday parties are one of the best ways to connect with your coworkers, find common interests.
Those connections will help you in your everyday job, and when you are looking for a job.

Do you have a good excuse to skip?
Skip if you don’t want to go, no big deal
