OP Yup. Biggest reason I’m looking to leave, among others of course. I belong to one group who has nothing to do with my skill set but there’s always that pesky TFS that wants you to get staffed in the wrong projects. I want to belong where I feel my skills are and as you mention, it’s better to quit and do it somewhere else.
Connect with managers or senior managers in strat and ask to help out. People always need help with extra stuff. Tell them "I've done X which applies to Y strat projects. How can I be involved?" If you stand out they will reach out to you when they need an all star for the next project. Strat bench may be heavy but skills and reputation can trump that.
Do you think it's a small number of people that want to move into Strategy?
@A3 Road Block 1: can't get on a Strat project because im not in Strat and/or Strat bench is high. It's a vicious cycle. Thank you for the advice though A3!
I've worked with plenty of MC people. Not uncommon at all for projects to be staffed across both.
@SC1 im aware of the dangers but being in MC right now is so limiting in terms of quality work. Majority is staff aug or tech imp even in "MC". So I'd rather take my chances in strat to bust my ass and do impactful work. Even in Strat, MBA sponsorship is case by case unlike GSAP, so not a driving factor. Experience, exposure, intellectually satisfying projects are the attractive factor(s).
@A4 yeah I guess I could be CDO or Federal
@Sc1 would love if you can connect the dots! CMT or Products. Also I've always thought cold reaching out to partners is just tacky and a no-no. Should I change my own strategy first??
I am a Senior at PwC. I cold reach out to everyone. Some people actually respond.
About to be staffed on 3rd strat role as 1st year CDP. Not unlike OP, I am very keen on moving to Strat but it just sounds like it’s gonna get harder and harder. Been working on building strat network but idk man. It’s been quite a hustle. I might just lock in my bonus after a year and jump ship if there’s too many internal corporate roadblocks.
Op take the path of least resistance to get to what you want. If S& is easier for you to get into, then go there. If you're really want to work at Acn Strat, go back to Acn after some time at S&. Like D1 said, it won't matter in the end, don't waste your time begging.
ACN, especially HR helps you find ways to leave the firm even when you’re not looking to go. There’s very little flexibility to make the right choice for the individual. Ultimately good people leave while lower performers rarely get “up or outed”
OP yes, most likely start as first year from what I have heard. Definitely at MBB it’s like that
@A9 the strategy HRCA/TFS's are the worst. I try to seek advice from them etc and the elitist nature starts with them. In the end they're still HR no idea why they act like that 🙄
A11 what kind of argument is it? If one wants to do strat work then one should try to align with strat group. Why should he stay in his alignment and keep hustling and squeezing in the strat projects that he wants to do? And to your point, if he’s already doing that kind of work and he’s not strat, doesn’t it speak to his abilities to do the work and go the extra mile? What you said makes no sense in terms of career progression at all.
@a11 Strat bench is so high MC resources aren't considered
Yup agreed that that the path to success is through Ms and SMs. Partners ask us to staff teams
Why you want to move?
Timelines match your skill set? Care to expand?
Also if any Strat people want to chime in and help me overcome this ludicrous culture/situation - much appreciated!
They're also making a calculated bet that most of you won't leave. More value in stealing someone away.
Do you have an MBA?
