I overheard two managers worrying that one division might be overstating revenue in our quarterly reports. Now I’m unsure... should I confront them, go to the CFO, or wait to get more facts? I don’t want to ignore something serious, but I also don’t want to cause unnecessary trouble if it’s nothing. Has anyone else dealt with a situation like this?

That sounds tough. If I were you, I’d probably have a quiet word with the managers to hear more, just so I know what’s actually happening before deciding what to do next. Sometimes just opening the conversation helps clear things up or shows if it’s something worth investigating further. It’s a tricky spot. Trust your instincts and gather more info if you can.

Don’t go to the manager first. Report anonymously - and quietly - to someone in finance with some clout. If you go to the managers first, they can cause problems for you in other ways. Do not get involved. Report to the person responsible for looking into it.

Right now it I couldn’t label it anything but gossip.
Worrying and knowing are two very different things. I assume quarterly reports are your financial statements? Is there an opportunity to manipulate data? Usually it’s tied down with data such as receipts/postings in the system(s)

Wait to get more facts but do some checking in the meantime. Is there a mistake in one of the reports that could be construed as overstating or are there people who just talk sh-t to pass the time.

If you just heard them worrying then all it is is speculation. I’ve heard people talk all the time about fudging number, but there’s a wide bridge between creative accounting vs. actual Enron level malice. Can try being a part of the conversation but confronting would come off as an accusation.

Being that I am new I am still learning all the processes however cannot find a single process narrative. In order to better my experience performance I have attempted to find some type of structure.

Currently a staff in audit - 6 months in. Glad to be learning a lot, and have had a generally positive experience at the firm other than a few interactions, some tough busy season nights. Really been intrigued by TAS/M&A, however, and had a few convos with a senior in TAS i know at the firm. It’s closer to what I studied, but don’t know how to make the jump as it seems an internal transfer could take 6+months/senior rank and a lot of convincing. Is it better to jump firms/has anyone done this?
