I’ll tell you what... the ability to pass is 100% a mindset commitment. It requires focus when studying, focus when reviewing, and focus when test taking. I have a feeling when it comes to the test itself that’s where people panic and lose their cool. If the friend really wants it they’ll have to make some real-short term sacrifices. If they keep doing the same thing they’ll keep getting the same results.
Ask if he needs help. Maybe yiu can help answer questions/run flashcards.
Also, i know when I was studying while working, one of my biggest issues was leaving on time to study or put aside my work anf study at the client before leaving. Maybe just helping him manage his time with work.
Well for perspective I have a friend who never got their CPA. His wife did. His brother did. The rest of our group did. Every once in awhile I bring it up and he flies off the handle... which is hilarious to watch.
Some people just can’t get it done and it handicaps their career. Nothing you can really do since its on them not you. Now, you can not make it worse (not the route I choose) but that’s about all
Haha — it’s okay!
Imo — he needs to
A) time engagements, PTO, secondments, etc around study and test taking
Or
B) quit and work in a place where he has time to study.
I did the latter (B) and passed all mine.
C) take a leave of absence if he could afford it, or PTO in order to study
You can't do anything. It's up to them.
If you can help with his workload so he can leave early one day i week I’m sure he would appreciate it
How long has he been working and has he completed any sections yet?
It depends on why he lost those parts. Sometimes life truly does get in the way and thing like health or family issues keep someone from finishing on time.
I have had one superstar senior who had issues that caused him to lose a section and therefore couldn’t be promoted. The biggest issue was staff and seniors wondering why he hadn’t been promoted because he was clearly at the top of his class and thinking that the firm hadn’t been fair to him, and trying to find out from everyone why he was passed over. That was the first time it made a difference.
And I have a manager now who lost two or three sections several years ago, and finally passed last year. She had lost a father and had a child in the meantime but everyone knew she would get them eventually. It did cost her promotions for a while, and therefore some $, but we all knew she would eventually pass all of the parts
While on the one hand those kinds of issues are no on else’s business, if something happened to prevent him from passing the other parts, he may want to mention it to those who are involved in his evaluations. It could counteract any subconscious bias they might have thinking he wasn’t smart enough, motivated enough or serious enough about his career. It’s much more likely that people would think the latter two then the first, but they can also be the most damaging.
If he’s struggling, maybe ask if there’s anything you can do to help? I bet he’d appreciate it
