If you're not sure what was heard, I'm not sure whether addressing it is a good idea. It's possible the aunt didn't hear it. Or, it's possible she knows her niece is nothing special and wouldn't be offended. So that leaves a 25% chance she heard you and would be offended. One thought I would stress though, for future reference, is to always be discreet when talking about interns. You never know who they are related to. I guess we've all run into a situation along those lines.
This is a great way to look at it...very logical thinking! I think that even if the intern is now a new hire in your department, I still wouldn't say anything. You never know who or how people may retaliate.
Yeah I think ignore it

Thank you everyone for your guidance. I left one small detail out simply bc my post was too long- the intern has recently been hired into my department. Do I still keep my lips sealed and move on?
