Yes since covid ended we returned to RTO at 2 days a week and you can choose which two days and that can change every week at your choice. It's extremely flexible. I understand it's tough for those who love far from work but it's pretty flexible as you can choose the days.
I really hope they don't bump it up to more than 2 days in the office. I like the 2 days in office 3 days wfh balance.
My company did 3 days back in the office and I hated it. I was so much happier and more productive working from home. Decided that 100% remote is the job for me and went job hunting. It took me close to 6 months, but I found a fully remote job earlier this year.
A lot of departments stayed wfh, a handful though went to a hybrid schedule. Our closest campus was closed down so we were hoping it would mean staying wfh. I know a ton of places started RTO last year, will be interesting to see how many stay once the job market improves.
I've read that Amazon wanted to shed a lot of staff and they are using the RTO mandate to accomplish that. In a cold-blooded way it makes sense, it gets people to quit on their own. I suppose it could be argued that they may lose some talented people they would be better served to keep, but they seem not to care about that. In my own case, I've been lucky and able to stay remote, but I assume that will end at some point.

I don’t see why employers want employees to RTO so badly
One of the reasons is cost. Companies just can’t easily reduce their real estate footprint. They can loose hundreds of thousands of dollars by pulling out of long term leases early. And mortgage loans don’t disappear. So it’s more cost effective to have staff back in the office. While not ideal for those who were able to WFH, it beats having to reduce staff to save money.
