If you crush the interview rounds, you can always state your expectations. No point flip flopping this early.
True. I haven’t received any detailed information about benefits package or bonus structure yet so hoping to use that as leverage if needed.
I would wait until later in the process, see what the job entails, and go from there. You can negotiate based on the responsibilities of the job and say something like “given that this is a more senior role with more significant demands than I realized when I spoke with the recruiter, I believe XYZ salary is in line with this role”
There’s nothing wrong with stating your expectations on salary up front as long as those are your real expectations. Decide what you want and either the employer will be cool with it or they won’t. I think it’s more of a waste of time to move forward in the process without discussing salary because if there’s a large gap in expectations, why waste everyone’s time? Also if you get an offer, it’s not final until you accept it so you’re not locked in.

Is the range you gave actually the range you’re willing to take?
Correct
I always thought you had to give a range when they ask. What's the harm in that?
No harm in asking for a range, but the range I gave is not what I would need in order to move to a different firm since I’m only passively looking at other opportunities. I don’t want to lowball myself.

Just aim for the high end of the range and use their benefits package and sign on as the reason that your target is where it is within your range.
