I think my boss is mentally living in 2002. Because when I told him I needed a raise, since my salary wasn’t keeping up with the cost of living, he laughed. Then, once he composed himself, he asked if I was joking, I said no. Then he proceeds to tell me that a $58,000 a year salary is more than enough to live off of. I’m single and live in Memphis, my salary barely covers the rent. What’s my next move here?

That is so out of touch. Cost of living has changed so much, and $58k does not stretch like it used to. Honestly, I would start quietly looking for a new role while you still have this one. A boss who laughs at a raise request is not someone who is going to invest in you.

likehelpfulsmartuplifting

". . .Invest in you." He probably won't, you're right, and thank you for being supportive.

You should not be asking for a raise “since your salary isn’t keeping up with the cost of living.” If you’re asking for a raise, it should be because you’re providing more value to the company in some way. Because you’ve grown your skills, because you’ve exceeded the expectations they had for you when you were hired, because your responsibilities have changed, because of something else. When costs increase for you due to inflation, they increase for the company as well.

Median household income in Memphis is $51k. For “non-families” (single people living alone or with others) is $38k (according to worldpopulationreview.com, which I know nothing about). So that would indicate that $58k is, in fact, more than enough to live on. But you might have to find a different place to rent, or get some roommates.

Others have said he isn’t qualified to say what you can live on. That’s true - but OP brought it up. If you bring up your personal finances in a conversation with your boss, then he’s entitled to tell you his opinion. Keep it professional. Don’t talk about your personal finances; talk about your value to the company.

likefunnyhelpfulsmart

Yeah, I was gonna say, 58g in Memphis is pretty do-able, then again it depends on what the job is, education, training- but as far as keeping up with the cost of living, 58g is more than most teachers make in larger more expensive cities- not saying it's right, but...

OK I get it your asking for advice. Don't even bother asking for a raise you woul of reliever a pay increase annually. Your boss doesn't care the making 6 figures . Don't sell yourself so short & find another job

Find a new job.

Lowe’s tenure shifted the company from innovation and craftsmanship to a quantity-over-quality mindset, and customers have felt the impact. I spent ten years at Verizon when its telecommunications excellence set the standard, but today’s leadership has eroded that legacy—the company is no longer the powerhouse it once was.

tiime to jump ship

Time to move on.

Sadly, your next move is to exit this company after securing a new role that pays you what you are worth.

have less kids

Why haven’t you looked for other employment!? You must like where you are or you would have found new employment

if it is costing you nearly 58k in rent a year your problem is not your salary it is where you are living. here in central pa if i made 58k a year i would be able to live like a king

Get a new job.

Please I have a question.
What is a salary amount for entry level (as a customer service representative)

Wish could earn such here in Kenya

I worked at Van der Graaf in Brampton. I know the pain of this predicament. your Boss is not your buddy. If they are living under a rock, and don’t understand financial environments (which I think is BS, they probably just want to save that money). You have to be PREPARED. If you tell him you want a raise you need to also be prepared to leave the company and have another job lined up. Let your boss sit on it for now, but chances are this guys alarm is going off and he will either give you a raise or terminate you, or force you to quit. So best practice is apply for other work, arm yourself with the next conversation (backup your chat with your achievements and quantify them). Also be prepared to make notes of those meetings for legal reasons in case your boss tries to force you to quit. Take your own power, protect your peace.

Not knowing the years of experience to compare to the market rate in the area it will be hard to provide if the person is underpaid for Customer Manager. If the person is underpaid, it will be best to look for another job base on the years of experience in what the market rate is going for. If do get an increase at the current job, it will be another 23 years before you get another salary increase as the boss sound like it is funny.

I work for a local government and my job position is unionized in which I get a raise every year. Maybe try to find a local government position of the job position you are working at as a Customer Manager.

The first thing you should do is leave Memphis. Nobody owes you a job. Sitting in a fabric-covered cube is not "working."

Job hopping is the only way US workers get a decent pay raise.
That's why during the hiring boom CEOs went on the record saying that they need the labor market to be tight so workers "can be put in their place."

Meaning they need you scared of losing your job, so you settle for less and so there are as few job hopping opportunities as possible.

Your next move is to find another job ASAP. Your boss now knows you're discontent. Things may start to get weird now.

then maybe I should ask the government for $30,000 a year cost of living raise since I only get $800 on social security's every month and that is below poverty level, I have to live with someone who is willing to tolerate my low rent fee and my attitude towards the government, you know they won’t because they want us poor and desperate to do anything for them, stand up! Get off your knees! Fight for your God givi rights! It’s illegal to be triple and quadruple taxes. They never help th homeless they only help themselves to our tax money and it never goes on what we the people want it to go to.

Is Verizon Really a Sinking Ship?
Verizon has been facing some serious challenges lately. Many people believe that the company's leadership is making poor decisions, which could lead to significant problems in the future.

Major Financial Losses
One of the biggest blunders was the OATH attempt, which cost Verizon over $13.6 billion. This kind of loss raises eyebrows and makes investors nervous about the company's future.

Market Performance
For the past three years, Verizon's stock has been stuck around $30.00. This stagnation indicates a lack of confidence in the company's ability to grow and innovate.

T-Mobile's Rise
Meanwhile, T-Mobile has been making waves in the industry. They have introduced competitive pricing, attractive deals, and even international plans that appeal to many customers. This shift shows that Verizon is not the only player in the game anymore.

Leadership Concerns
Critics argue that Verizon's executives are out of touch with the current market. They seem to struggle with hiring new talent and developing innovative products that can compete with companies like Apple, Google, and Meta.

Future Outlook
If Verizon continues on this path, it may become a target for acquisition by larger tech companies. With consistently poor numbers expected in the 2026-2027 first quarter, the pressure is on for Verizon to turn things around.

Conclusion
In summary, Verizon is facing significant challenges that could impact its future. With strong competition from T-Mobile and concerns about leadership, the company needs to make some serious changes to stay afloat.

The moment I knew I had to leave.

My old boss once told me he was going to make me “rich” that month—by giving me a $7,000 salary after tax. I was running on pure commission. No holiday, no sick leave, just 200 hours of relentless work, driving to country courts 15 days a month, paying for fuel, parking, and the wear and tear on my own car.

In 2024, $7k post-tax for that kind of grind? That’s not rich. That’s insult with a smile.

That was also my ceiling there. You can’t physically clock over 200 hours without risking a stroke or heart attack.

Then he said, “When I started, I was on 35k a year.” That was the final nail.

I quit. Went out on my own. Never looked back. Every moment since—regardless of the money—has been better.

Because freedom pays what money can’t

Is it too late in our lives to jump into a mortgage?

So my fiancée and I are relatively late in terms of finally landing well paying jobs and being able to save money instead of living paycheck to paycheck. We’re both 36 and currently rent a 2 bedroom in NY and have a combined savings of $35,000 which she wants to use as a down payment on a condo. I kinda just wanna continue saving while renting. I also literally just started contributing to my 401K so I’m also late in the game for that too.

So I say this with complete humility and an understanding that this is a fortunate-ish situation to be in. I’m in a position where I am tied to nothing, I have no children, spouse, or house. My job, which I’ve loved until some recent significant leadership changes, is sucking the life out of me and I think it may be time for a change. Because I am able to “pick up and go” I’m open to opportunities and locations. I’ve never worked with a recruiter but was hoping I could get some recommendations!
