The chaos is the job...if you’re waiting for it to calm down, you picked the wrong industry. The sooner you stop chasing “normal,” the happier you’ll be. Or you’ll quit, and honestly, that’s valid too.
I wish I could say it stabilizes and gets less insane. But it doesn’t, that’s a large part of why some of us are drawn to the industry. I personally love the constant last minute changes and I thrive on the chaos. There’s no way I’d be able to stay awake during a ‘normal’ job, but in saying that, I’ve seen a lot of people come and go from the industry because this lifestyle is incredibly demanding and it really isn’t for everyone.
Finding and sticking with a good team really helps, and for me the knowledge that no matter how bad it gets, it’s only for a few weeks/months before moving to something new.
There can be some enjoyment in the chaos! Part of what helps me get through it is having a great team to share these thoughts and experiences with. It does stabilise at times but I'd learn to ride the chaos too!
I actually had a career change out for a while, missed it so much, came back in! Lots of other fields have their own brand of disarray too. Sometimes I have periods of constant chaos other times where the stability actually gets boring. It all makes it interesting to me.
Yes the chaos can be hard sometimes, it’s hard to juggle working life with your personal life. As a freelancer I always try to take a break in between jobs to recharge, see friends and family. But do look after your mental health during the job! Talk to your peers if so!
Totally feel this—it really is glamorized chaos most of the time. I don’t know if it ever fully stabilizes, but I’ve found it helps to create my own version of stability: setting boundaries and finding solid collaborators. Loving the work keeps me going, but yeah... it’s okay to admit it’s exhausting too.
