I am an American who did the same thing. The job market in Western Europe for accountants is super good right now, and it is your best chance to get in. I can’t speak for England, but they tend to be more difficult to get into. The Netherlands is extremely easy for Americans, and you can qualify for 30% of your salary to be tax-free if you are recruited from abroad.
Some companies will also let you work as a 1099 employee. You just have to make sure you are following the tax laws in the country you are going to. Some countries will not hire people generally if you do not speak their language, but Holland, Belgium, Denmark, and Switzerland tend to be more open to English-only associates.
I moved to the Netherlands (Holland), 6 years of experience in PA at the time, in audit. All of the big 4s have US pools where you move here and work on SEC clients in audit/tax.
How do you find jobs in the Netherlands.
LinkedIn is the best way. They use LinkedIn in Holland so much. You can also reach out to companies like RobertWalters. They’re willing to help people with no visa status.
If you come as a self employed person to Holland, there’s no need to get a visa before you come. Instead, show up and apply for the Dutch American Friendship Treaty once you’re already here. You cannot get the 30% ruling tax discount this way, but it’s easy and almost a 100% approval rate for 2 years, then an easy extension for 5 years.

The best move for your career will be to not define the specific locations you want to go but rather to go to the location where are you are needed the most
I wasn’t planning on staying in NYC but I got a really great opportunity so I stayed. But next time around I think I might want to have location be more of a factor. Willing to pay for it in salary and recoup later
Keep in mind that cost of living in Switzerland is very expensive
Yeah I know it’s maybe worse than NYC but idk I’m still interested haha
Come to Swiss! You make plenty of money and it’s not more expensive than nyc as long as you’re not buying. Best decision ever.
I have gotten by in Zurich only on English for short trips. Some basic German skills can’t hurt. Not sure if the same is true in the western cities of Basel and Geneva which tend to use more French than German.
No one pays as well as the US.

We will not find another country in the world where big 4 auditors enjoy as good of a standard of living as they do in the US.
