I want to return to big law so badly.

In a big company where legal is 0.5 % of the workforce, you’re a pariah. In big law, you’re at least surrounded by 90 % pariahs.

Sounds more like a problem with the company than in house jobs in general.

100%. Always a bad sign. And very worrisome when the organization in question is the pentagon. Not trying to politicize the conversation but that’s a great example of the precise problem we are discussing.

Big law ghe lawyers are revenue generators. In many companies lawyers are cost centers.

like

A lot of otherwise smart businesspeople are not smart enough to realize this, and hence lawyers are not valued. Same with many other cost centers not being properly valued.

Having been a (very valuable yet underappreciated) cost center before law school, it is REALLY nice to be a key revenue-producing asset now in BigLaw.

You're an expense in-house. You're a revenue generator in a law firm. Big difference.

Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. I cry every day and constantly am made to feel stupid for not understanding the highly technical (cont.)

Did your firm’s leadership send a message re the horrific shooting? Before I lateraled we always got emails from leadership, which IMO were very humanizing and appreciated. I’m have a new theory about why juniors always feel like idiots and wanted to see if anyone else thinks this makes sense. I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? And FWIW I went to HYS and I’ve had a clerkship so it’s not like I’m not smart

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?

Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.
