Provided 3, but they were not the principal partner I worked with, who is unhappy to lose team (me and another assoc), since I’m afraid of retaliation (and said partner is also mired in HR issues currently). However, the partner was mentioned during the interview as someone I worked with, so I feel scared now that my lateral firm partners are wondering why I didn’t include. I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

Three job interviews with a company, last one creating a marketing plan and presenting to marketing VP. I received good feedback from him. Three days later recruiter wants to give me a call and “give an update”. Schedules it after 2 days. This morning cancels last minute as they are having “internal discussions”. AmLaw200 I interviewed with will likely go with a “more experienced candidate”. I’ve got 8 years and its a staff attorney role so whatever. Partner I met with was rushed from the start like he had already made up his mind. Pissed because they knew from the recruiter that I was a “diverse” candidate and they sent me the Mansfield self-identification survey days before they actually requested an interview.

I'm a cashier. We just got a new manager, and she's making things really hard for us. She starts work at 4:30am and leaves around 2:30pm, but she still expects us to stay until 6pm and work on the weekends! She gives us really long shifts and doesn't give us much time for breaks. And when we ask her about it, she gets mad.

I had a panel interview two weeks ago. I sent the recruiter a status check email last Friday and haven't heard back. I'm really interested in this company and still see the role posted on their site. I'd like to send another email today (to the hiring mgr and recruiter) reiterating my interest along with a list of references. Thoughts on sending the references without them asking? I don't do well with panel interviews and I'm hoping they look past that and check my references.

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.

Should I complain to a firm's HR if the interviewers laughed at my answer during an interview? Maybe it sounded scripted but it was still heartfelt and genuine: my immigration story and how that made me appreciate the rule of law. When, if ever, do you add “Esq.” to your name outside of work?

I’m currently in a minor dispute with a company over a credit card overcharge and am wondering if I should have added “Esq.” to my signature in my complaint email lol.

To all those in management, how do firms that haven’t instituted pay cuts/furloughs manage to do that? Is it because their clients are still paying the bills, because they are borrowing money, because partners just won’t see profit this coming year? Some combo?

I’m in this business to cure my inferiority complex. Making lots of money, working with fortune 500 clients and walking the streets of NYC with a suit, tie and briefcase makes me feel important and worthy.

I often wish I could be like my law school friends who either moved to small towns or have public sector or non profit jobs, wear sweaters and jeans to work and make far less than me, but are happy with their lives, feel a sense of meaning with their work and don’t need external validation.
