I work at a startup — our CEO has requested we have our video on during every call. I have a 5-6 calls a day. I think this is ridiculous. I will be leaving in the next 2-3 months. Is there a politically correct way to say this is too much? I have zoom fatigue and these demands are an example of how I’m working for a dictator and why I need out.

Asking me to be visible for 5-6 meetings? OMFG CEO you are clearly the devil.

Oh you precious thing you.

Imagine how horrible it will be when you have to dress up, like EVERY day, and commute to an office. And literally have people see you for 8+ hours straight. Obnoxious.

It’s simply medieval.

likefunnysmarthelpful

SC1 agree 100%. Two different points.

Try turning on to say hello at the beginning but disclose you have some distractions in the background that you don’t want to subject the others to and will be turning off camera

Grow up I’m on meetings all day with the video on it’s the new norm

What’s the difference between someone watching you continuously while you are at home and in the same room with them? The whole point of wfh is to maximize the in-person experience

Man, everyone’s super salty about this. I get it OP. I don’t mind dressing up and going to the office. I signed up for that. I HATE video calls. I didn’t sign up to inviting my coworkers and clients into my home every day.

like

Why do you want to see me if I don’t want to see you?

funny

Work life balance is dead, thanks to video. Remember when we could go do errands on Fridays and still get our calls in, even if they were from the parking lot of the grocery store. Now video and constantly having screen sharing going are a subtle, passive agressive way to ensure we're at our laptops. 🤦‍♂️

like

Request <> demand. See if it is actually enforced since I doubt your CEO is on all of them.

like

Or you can refuse to do things and be respected for your convictions and healthy boundary setting

like

I agree... I like to pace during certain calls or just 1 on 1s but no longer can.

likesmart

This. I love to pace. Doing it in love meetings is annoying (I’ve tried). So this was one of the few benefits of a call - now I’m supposed to sit still for an hour even if I’m not actually presenting.

like

Yeah keep it off when you need and if anyone says anything share th article (hbr maybe?) about what requiring this is problematic.

like

Just get some huge BLM posters and put them in your background. Or MAGA- whichever is more likely to offend their sensibilities

funnylike

I don’t see the problem with his request. Developing interpersonal bonds when working remotely is hard enough, doing that completely devoid of non-verbal cues would be even harder. I honestly think this won’t be enforced on 100% of calls, 100% of the time, but I think he’s saying this to establish a norm, which is a totally valid request in this day and age. I don’t think this makes him a dictator, unless he is firing people for non-compliance. That might be a little extreme.

likesmart

I also work at a start up if that helps

funny

To give you a little perspective , that has been the norm for all of the clients I have served during COVID.

Wasn’t a fan at first, but soon you notice when you get on calls that don’t have video, they feel a little more disconnected.

Yeah, I wanted to work in my underwear or work from my toilet. Now, I can’t. 😓

You still can? Donald duck it + zoom background and you are good

So...
What to do? What to do?

Came back to school in August with a cruise ship still sitting on my stage. We walked away from Anything Goes the day after the sitzprobe because of the quarantine. Still taking the wind out of my sails.

We are here now, but not able to stage shows. Logic says, "Do a radio show!" Just not sure I want to subject the kids to the emptiness of that performance style given the Zoom life they've been living. The production of it could be fun though.

Generally curious how many companies offer phone reimbursement? My last gig did not but the current one does. I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?
