I work for a boutique firm in a large west coast city. No clue what it costs or means if I’d make partner. How does the process usually work? I’m currently a senior associate. Been here a bit more than a year. Not sure if I want to stay and grind the billable hours or try to move to in-house or government law in the same industry.

Depends on the firm. Sometimes it depends on years of practice or years with firm. Others its both. Partner means usually more autonomy on cases and being able to bring in your own clients. Higher salary and hogher hours. Could also mean having stake in firm as well but again that depends on firm.

That moment when your "smart" plan to boost your hours this month by working the Labor Day weekend (thus turning down all the fun plans your friends made) becomes sitting on your hands & feeling dumb because all the partners are too busy to delegate anything. Partners/shareholders - how many hours are you expected to bill on work vs client dev and firm/associate management? My firm keeps saying that "there's no such thing as a relationship partner" and everyone top-to-bottom is expected to log 2000 hours/year on real billable work. Marketing etc is done on top of that. Is that normal?! If so, I'm going to have to totally rethink my life goals.

Is $70,000/year, requiring 1600 billable hours, with a $4K bonus if I make the billable hours requirement, reasonable for family law?

Has anyone left, or had an associate leave, a small firm and remain of counsel or in some other capacity to assist with a handful of matters going to trial? How did you structure compensation? Don’t want to leave my boss in the lurch with some big cases going to trial at end of year but also can’t use those as excuses to stay. Would like to offer a reasonable proposal. Even if boss turns it down, I’ll feel better about knowing I offered to help.
