I'd like to chat with someone who has taught multi-grade ELA classrooms at the HIGH SCHOOL level. If there is such a person or such a thing.

To clarify your question: Do you mean taught multiple levels of ELA at the high school level or had students from multiple grades in one class?

Just heard that my district will have classroom and live-recording learning. I’m thankful because I now can feed my family, my newborn and a recent-sponsored wife! I’m scared because I’m almost 50 and I’m afraid I might catch the virus and die leaving behind my 1 month baby and a wife who is not legal in the state yet! The USCIS or Trump’s dept. thinks she’s not good enough to be in the US!! We applied for green card and SS card since August 2019!

I started the school year with a class of 12 self-contained students (FR and SF mixed class) math class. Slowly, but surely, my roster bubbled to 17. Since we are all virtual instruction, I said to myself, it's OK. Now, we learned we are going back to the classroom in March, and my room is very small, set for 12 students max? In addition, I only have one teacher's aid, who just told me that she is dyslexic and can't help me too much. I am getting nervous as the days go by! Any suggestions?

I have a high level of ADD/ADHD students, so I was contemplating a Morning Meditation and/or Movement to help them focus more. I also would like to work on incorporating transition periods that will allow them to more easily convert to a six period schedule in high school.

I also enjoy teaching life skills, such as investing, and would love recs

I have tax provision experience. Worked for public for 3.5 years. And finishing my year in industry. I loved public because it had a more consulting role - interaction with clients, multiple teams, and variety in my work. Now that I am in industry, it’s more technical and less interactions with people in general. It has made me realize, I don’t think I actually like taxes. Has anyone faced a similar dilemma and what other opportunities did you pursue after? Also don’t want to be a senior foever

I'm trying to choose between IBM Corporate Strategy and Innosight. I like both opportunities. Innosight pays more, but I've never had a big brand like IBM on my resume. So far have passed through a quick call with the recruiter but now preparing for a phone-screen case before hopefully moving onto 1st round. I work for a biotech in Cambridge, MA, I’ve been with this company growing out the general ops team for almost 3 years. I was making 78k as the senior operations associate. I just was promoted to Operations Manager and was offered a salary increase to 85k. Based off of my research this is very low based on comps and the economy. Anyone have any tips on how I should approach a negotiation to ask for more? Median salaries for my type of role are between 100-120.

When pushing for a tier promotion (level 2 to level 3), is there a best way to also say what I want to be paid? Or do I just accept the pay increase that the promotion brings and wait until an annual review to negotiate a new salary? The requirements for the level 3 include 4 YoE, with 6 YoE preferred. I’ll have 5 when I push for the promotion, so I’d want more than the base level of pay in the range.

Do you do most of your novel reading in class or assign it for homework? Why?

Are any of the ELA teachers here also directing school plays, either by choice or by obligation?

I happily directed three plays a year for all 28 years of my career, but I know some teachers get "stuck" with doing the plays. I would love to be a resource, particularly for those in the second situation.

Can a principal ask a teacher to use some of their planning time to write late students tardy slips when they get to school every single day? Keep in mind this is the only planning period the teacher gets and it’s only 50 minutes long.

Several years ago, I stopped teaching Shakespeare plays line for line. Instead, I have the kids do a variety of activities to learn the plot, the characters, the history, the language, the literary devices. We watch the plays. We read and analyze the important quotes, soliloquies, monologues, and dialogues. How many teachers out there are teaching Shakespeare differently than the old standard: read an act, take a quiz? And how is that working? Are students more engaged? Best strategies?
