I've had friends who were offered scholarships by the companies they were working for and had a contract agreement where they were made to stay for a number of years to sort of pay off the grant. If you weren't given a clause of that sort, you're free to take the higher offer.
Thanks! That is very helpful! I don't think I have anything holding me back!
My employer paid for my MBA, they had an agreement I had to sign that I would stay for 1 year after, if not I had to reimburse them the cost paid for that previous year (so not the full tuition only the 1 year amount paid) I stated but my friend said if I wanted to look around to find a job that would include that payment I owed to my company in my new compensation package. You don’t owe them anything to stay, you are working still, the tuition is an extra benefit. If you leave just be prepared to owe them some money back.
I thought it wasn’t for a long time, but you need to look out for yourself and do you. So if that means leaving, then so be it. The company can leave you (lay you off) at any time
You’re very welcome! It’s definitely a sticky, not-ideal situation. Gooooddd luck!!
A lot of companies will either make you pay back or at least a prorated amount. There should be some agreement or language in your employee handbook about it.
But I don’t think you should stay just because they paid. If a better offer comes along then take it. I don’t think it’s an ethical matter. You might feel a bit guilty but do what is best for you and yours. The company will be fine either way.
Thanks! That is very helpful. I hope that my company doesn't take it against me. And the tuition reimbursement was part of my "benefits," so I don't know if they will make me pay for it.
You can leave but they won’t reimburse you
The only explanation I received was that after six months of being employed FT, I could get tuition reimbursement. I will have to dig more into that.
Either leave before the fully period inwhich you wouldn't need to pay back or analyze if it'd worth leaving even with paying back mba. It's worth it to do what's best for you companies do the same
Oh! That is a good point. I'm going to contact HR to check before making a decision.
It depends on the company. A friend got her masters then left soon after. The company had nothing in place to do anything about it. I would check to see if there is any time or financial obligation to them covering the costs.
That's what I'm going to do! I need to check on the employee handbook manual and its benefits.
Likely some sort of requirement that the education is free pending you staying for a certain allotment of time. I'd stay until the degree is paid off at the very least.
Thanks, RC. I will most likely do that! No need to stay if there is another offer. I will talk to HR first to see when I can quit.
I looked into a program that would have paid my entire undergrad and grad education but the employer commitment was six years.
The employer was the US Navy and it was a Nuke Fellowship. 😉
My actual point is this. Check all the internal requirement and decide if you can live with any requirements.
I would consider seeing if your current company can match if you are okay with staying. But yeah, otherwise you will probably have to pay back all or portion of what they paid for you within a certain time limit.
Check the company policy. You may be required to stay for X or you have to pay it back. When a company pays for your education they typically want to also reap the benefits
Depends on your agreement with the company. I know some company requires employees to stay with them for a certain number of years after completing their MBA. Might as well check your contract.
Read your company’s Ed refund policy. If you leave within xx you may be required to pay it back.
