Are you happy with the rules you’re following? Is it working for you? Figure out what you don’t like and just have a conversation with your manager about them and see what you can make work.
Those people boasting about abusing the rules that are already lax? That screams attitude problem and is likely going to show up in other areas for them and will bite them.
A friend works at a major organization that is tracking badge scans for 3 days a week, needing compliance 4 weeks out of 6. Fairly lax - but there are disciplinary measures in place and if you consistently breach them you’re going to lose your job (and the company manages its headcount down without going through layoffs).
So consider that if you’re company needs to downsize and a 10% RIF is implemented, it can come down to the people being cut those that can’t toe the line. If I’m cutting 1 out of 10 and I’m down to the two weakest players on my team, I’ll look to take care of the one who is at least working within the parameters set.
That’s a good point! I’m pretty happy with the policy but it does sting a bit to see others only come in once a week. It’s been happening for more than a year now so I don’t think the company’s taking any serious measures to enforce the mandatory attendance.
We are 3 days in per week, and it's pretty strictly enforced by our badge scans to get into the building. Anyone who doesn't meet the policy on a rolling 4 week is put on disciplinary policy - it hasn't happened yet
We had a similar policy at my last job. 3 days on 2 days remote and attendance was tracked via badges. People still didn't show up all 3 days quite often though. I remember feeling frustrated when they gave me a reminder about the policy but it seemed like certain people got away with not showing up all 3 days.
My company assigns a week of the month to come in. Because people aren’t complying they’ve started cracking down and now you can get let go or get smaller bonus/no raise if you aren’t complying with in office policy.
Rising Star
We are 2 days a week in the office, since we downsized offices during the pandemic, we dont have enough desks for everyone to sit, so, we have to rotate, and then no one goes in on fridays
I am lucky to have a very flexible department lead, so we are kind of trusted on our own to get things done and as long as work keeps getting out, no problems. I was worried we’d start to get some minimum number of days, but so far that’s not the case. If it was me, I’d just follow along. Sometimes there’s issues under the surface you don’t see when people aren’t following the rules.
My husband only has to go in once a month. They did recently lecture his office about people abusing the system (calling out sick on the mandatory in-office day etc). One of the other offices further south had fully returned 5 days a week because of so many abusing the system. So the managers were basically like, don't abuse the system so everyone has to go back to the office.
