What are you priorities? If you are looking for career progress the best thing you can do is leave gain experience and come back at a higher level. If your real interest is kite surfing and this job gives you the funds and time to do that then it is okay. Our jobs aren't our identity or value - though so I know that's easier said than felt.

Stay five years to ensure your retirement otherwise you wasted the best part of being a govie to begin with. If you have a clearance, and especially a TS/SCI, you’ll make far more then you do now, a C level makes $90k in the private sector and you’ll do a lot of staff aug so the only difference is the amount of power you have now vs as a contractor. With some more years of experience and with the clearance you can easily hit gs15 step 8-10 money without trying hard.
Honestly I’m personally not sure what you could make in private sector is worth the WLB tradeoff but that’s me. My husband works for DC gvt - so benefits aren’t even as good - but his WLB is so nice. I don’t think the money is that good in public sector consulting (where you would likely go) to be worth the WLB tradeoff. Now if you know you’re a type A grinder and want to get promoted within private sector - and are willing to put in the crazy work to make manager, director and above - then sure the money will be more. But also the amount of work expected is tremendous compared to what you’re used to. And there are no guarantees you actually make it to those levels either
A GS-12 step 1 in DC is $90 k. There are more than a few senior consultants in the public sector making meaningfully more than that. Some of them are even doing staff aug where they basically work 40 hours a week.
DM me. I know a couple of private sector companies providing remote opportunities where your skills may align and the pay and benefits are excellent.
