Why are you trying to give yourself 2 jobs while only getting paid for one.
Any place that would hire a combo AD/CW is probably a sweatshop. Copywriting is way better than being a designer anyway.
ADs need to know and stay current with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere, Figma, PowerPoint, Keynote, Midjourney, and whatever else is “cutting edge”. It’s exhausting and we are also at the end of the line for updating comps and decks ad nauseam. I’d much rather be writing copy in a Word doc.
This sounds like a great idea... If you want to work 27hrs per day but get paid for 8.
As other said it’s a bad idea. The better one is to go ahead and learn design, especially if you’re interested in it… Then go freelance. You’ll have twice the opportunities.
Even people that are good at both can’t do two jobs at once. You will need time to ideate, time to make, and time to craft, separately. So hybrid creatives can’t actually save time, but that’s the expectation. They will however pay you less to do more. Any shop trying to hire “hybrids” doesn’t care about putting out decent work and, more importantly, doesn’t care about burning out their creatives.
my advice is that this industry sees a copywriter with some art skills as a bonus, but a dual AD/CW is seen as someone too lazy or unmotivated to get really good at and focus on one skill, which makes the best ADs and CWs out there. You can argue that’s not true, but just think of the people at the top who are hiring. If the role does exist given this info, think about why. If it doesn’t exist, it’s bc people want to hire good writers and good ad’s who are decided in what they want to and can do.
The only thing you can do with that is make a case for you to get promoted/shoot for a higher role. But you have to show and prove that you can do both or at least be a director for both
isn’t this what happens in the europe place i keep hearing about?
No, but they get more vacation
From experience most hybrid roles are at smaller shops or places that don’t pair up ADs and CWs. That said, you should definitely educate yourself around all the facets of production and develop a solid design sensibility for future roles and promotions. That goes for ADs as well, having a good understanding of the writing and strategy side as well. As a CD you will be making calls and giving feedback on both disciplines (again you’re not executing the work but you should know what programs for design, editing, animation even sound/music production are capable of)
I think learning more skills is an excellent idea. As much as our society rewards “specialists” your job security and the number of jobs you qualify for increases with more skills. Particularly in difficult economic times with shifting industries this is a huge pro. Also, if your ambition is to be a CD, having hands on experience across more parts of the medium is invaluable. Invest in yourself, don’t let the naysayers dissuade you from growing.
