I’m a few weeks into my new job and haven’t had much work. I’ve been letting partners know I’m available and have been asking for work but I’m worried my very low billable hours are going to look bad. I’m not sure how aggressive I should be in asking. I try to circulate through different partners every couple of days, because I don’t want to be nagging the same people every day. Any advice would be much appreciated!

I lateraled beginning of 2021 & my hours for Jan feb & March were terrible (like I think February was only 90 something hours!). I made up some but not all by the end of the year, & my firm still gave me an extremely generous bonus & raise. They should understand!!

If everyone was already in the middle of deals it can be difficult to bring a new person in. Enjoy the lull- you’ll get slammed soon enough I’m sure!

You’re only a few weeks in so I wouldn’t sweat it. Is everyone slow right now? If so, that’s probably why you haven’t been staffed on anything yet. Either way, talk to the partner who hired you or the practice manager or someone in professional development about what you should do to get staffed on deals. You can also check with other associates in your group about how they handle things - if you don’t know anyone from deals yet, just ask those that interviewed you.

I’m having the same issue and I’m not sure how to navigate it either, especially because my team is busy. Sorry I can’t be of much help but hopefully knowing other people are in a similar situation helps you feel less concerned.

Just enjoy being slow

This happened to me. Just ask if you can help 2-3 times daily and then enjoy doing nothing imo. Work will come and it’ll come fast and probably won’t be fun

Recent lateral junior associate in brand new practice where I'm the only associate. Do I need to be worried about getting fired for low hours?
