I’m a few years into my finance career and trying to figure out whether I should double down on a CFA or start learning Python and SQL. My long-term goal is to be in a strategic role that bridges finance and data, but I’m not sure what’s going to get results faster in the current market. For folks who’ve carved out hybrid roles in FP&A or data-driven finance, what made the biggest difference? Did formal credentials help or was it more about portfolio projects and networking?

Just for clarification, are you looking to use your own data / analysis to inform financial planners? Or lean more into a role that impact and/ or informs on company objectives, thus impacting financial planners? I am trying to understand your goal related to the intersection of these (2) types of listed skill sets.

SQL and Python made a faster impact for me. Once I could automate reports and dig into raw data, I stood out instantly in FP&A. CFA is great, but coding made me valuable to multiple teams.

I know many people who have their CFA and it has done nothing for them and I know some others that have benefited from it greatly but I think I’ve seen more people get higher roles from doing coding first then CFA or never doing CFA

100% learning Python and SQL has been more valuable to me. I am seeing it hold far more importance and weight when it comes to seeking new opportunities.

Both routes can be adjusted to your own needs and strengths, but personally Python and SQL knowledge will be more valuable in positions bridging the gap between normal finance teams and raw Data teams.

Summer intern at BCG. I've been told by a few people that you need to spend your first few cases "earning your stripes" to gain staffing optionality or be servile/loyal to a pyramid to gain access to the cooler case work within that PA. It's seemed particularly emphasized at times.

Is this the standard at McK? I'm trying to guage the staffing optionality and openness of McKinsey culture to direct your random walk.

Graduating Ph.D. program 2021, received offer from tiny boutique for 140TC+random small boutique benefits. Would be better commute, non metro area closer to home. Waiting to hear back from well known life science boutique (think ZS, Clearview, Putnam). Offer would be for NYC office, would likely relocate.

If offer is given, a) at what $ is this worth and b) is brand everything for first firm out of school?

Also would the life science boutiques reasonably pay more than that?

Fellow enterprise tech sales fish, I’m interested to hear your perspective. I’ve been in a rut lately and seriously considering leaving sales. I think it’s primarily fueled by one thing:
After a 6 mo cycle I closed a large deal (4x the average deal size) prior to receiving delayed 2022 comp plans. The deal counts as a 2022 deal. On last years comp plan it would’ve paid out at 10%. This year it pays out at a measly 4%.

How do you/have you navigated your way through and out of these situations?

I was recently (in April) fired from a good nursing position that I was at for 5 years. I reached out to my old ADON to get some information on where we had our vaccinations from and she told me that I should come back and the administrator that I had issues with is gone. Is this something I should even consider? I miss my patients and some of my coworkers and the pay is better, but I don't feel like I would really be welcome to come back.

About to head to the HC for a role in ProdOps and Strategy in Mountain View. 4 YoE at MBB, no competing offers. Recruiter gave me a form that asks expected comp.
Levels.fyi has only PM salaries. I haven’t been told the level but expect it to be L4.

What total comp would you expect for this role? Any advice would be super helpful, as I’m a bit lost.

Advice needed on handing in notice, I recently signed an offer letter and understand the screening process takes 4-6 weeks. I have a month's notice period and have agreed a preliminary start date in Feb.

I was planning on not handing my notice in until the checks had been completed so its all secured (not that I think I will fail any checks), but apparently I need a reference from my current employer not previous ones. Can't really do this without handing in notice can I?
